Fishing a Jig Style

In Stillwater. I'd like to try it this spring/summer. Cast & retrieve or under an indicator what's your go to?

I use both methods, indicator if there is some choppy water. Cast and retrieve otherwise.
One reason I really like fishing jigs under an indicator is I don't need "choppy water", you can make your own "chop" by twitching your rod tip - jigs the jig quite nicely.

@chrome/22 - I mostly fish jigs under an indicator but I also use them on sinking lines.

Indy fishing on the lakes I attend:
no wind = I prefer to use a bloodworm on the bottom with a chironomid 3' above that, start static hang, then micro pull and drop, or steady slow retrieve depending on what generates action.
with wind = jig hook tungsten beaded leeches under indicator. Usually start with a slow hand twist retrieve with occasional pause and work my way up to steady strip. I start with the jig a foot off the bottom.
no indy - soft hackle on a slow retrieve, or a jig leech tied thin and light.,

I fish mine predominantly under and indicator (95%). Even on dead calm days it can be VERY productive!

I had several guys say watching an indicator just sit there and staring at it is boring, I said if it's just sitting there staring at the indicator your doing it wrong! My method is this, cast a jigged fly (bottom fly) out under an indicator, after 3/5 minutes I start a retrieve either a hand weave or a twitch, twitch, twitch (hold on) wait 30 seconds, repeat. Then try a didn't casting spot, repeat retrieve.

I had an old guy help me once years ago, if your not catching or getting a bite after 15/20 minute change something. Depth (of fly 6 inches either direction, Retrieve, Location, Fly etc in that order. Even moving 5 get in one direction can literally make the difference.

Just my $0.02 worth

If I'm searching it's cast n retrieve. If I've got fish or structure located I like a float. The depth control a float gives, even retrieving a jig fly, is more productive for me.
