Obvious a HotRodzThat doesn't look like a bamboo rod, 3 demerits!![]()
The guide I went striped marlin fishing with was saying that there were similar bait balls but with wahoo about 30 miles south of us. Going on at the same time. Might be worth a try if you want a chance to hook one without trollingProbably Wahoo which are pretty high on my list, but I want one on fly gear. Not sure how doable that is without resorting to trolling (still would be an incredible strike). Ideally an airborne launched popper take. 30' leap, followed by a 50 mph run ... sign me up for that!
The trolling part is why the wahoo is so far down my list. I will admit that I got snipped by one while casting on Christmas Island tho. I have also seen some videos of spin fishers catching them while casting. Maybe you could tease them to within casting range if you can't find a bait ball. I wonder how fast a wahoo attacks a bait ballTough call.

Even so, dorado are almost too much fun, and possibly the perfect saltwater fly rod fish.
Tons of Spanish macks in Australia. Similar to wahoo. We fly fished only. Lots of bait balls with tuna and macks. Macks spearing through the ball. 15/20 feet in the air. But....the only way we could catch macks was trolling flies..Tough call.

In the Australian gear vids I've watched they're getting them on big, splashy poppers. Lots of commotion, really not a fast retrieve though. But yeah, the aerial strikes are stunning. Makes me wonder if there is a happy medium with speed and commotion that could get it done with a cast fly popper.Tons of Spanish macks in Australia. Similar to wahoo. We fly fished only.
