It was a good fishery when Rich was still around but is a mere shell of itself now.Easily the most untapped river near a metro in OR has to be the North Santiam, which I was introduced to by retired guide Rich Younger back when he had the fly shop in Salem.
Coupla dozen trips down that river during the seven years we lived in Salem and more often than not never saw another drift boat or even a bank angler, hooking healthy bow's as well as the occasional hatchery steelhead. From Stayton going east, there are miles of fine water. And plenty of excellent wading access for the explorer.
the man sure could tie flies..It was a good fishery when Rich was still around but is a mere shell of itself now.
Only 40 summer fish have returned to the Minto trap. Only 300 winter fish were counted there'
Thank you so much for taking the time to write that awesome note!I used to bow hunt a lot, I could probably give you some insight on NW oregon. I also came from a non fishing/hunting family and have had to learn on my own, but I used to hang out and hunt with some very elky locals that killed massive Roosevelt bulls in my previous life. Family and a different career put an end to that. I'm hoping to pick it up again in the future. I hear a good shop is G4 archery in North Plains, I plan on going there when I'm ready to buy a new bow and start again. What direction will you be heading, east towards the west slopes of Mt hood or west to the coast range?
Coast range rivers, smaller trout with some surprises, great blue line exploration area. I have caught some decent sea run and resident Cutts on the Wilson, Nehalem and Trask.
Santiam river, I have floated a few times with a guide for trout.
Willamette around where the Mckenzie dumps in or the forks above.
...Good trout rivers that arn't that far.
Don't forget hike in lakes.
And buy these books
