Finally stationed back in PNW

Jakeaba

Just Hatched
Hey all,
Been in the coast guard 17 years and lived all over the place. Finally settled back here in Lake Oswego, working in Portland. I’m originally from walla walla. In high school, I fished with a group of guys from Portland, but I can’t remember the name of the forum I was using back then to connect with folks. The guys name was Big Ben and I think he worked at WSU Vancouver.

I am a decent fly fisher when it comes to trout, but I’d love to learn how to fish for salmon/steelhead etc. I’m not a fly fishing purist and love fishing with my spinning equipment.

I also am trying to teach myself to hunt. I had just figured out a little about whitetail at my last duty station in New Orleans. Now I’m back to square one, but excited to learn as much as I can about western hunting.

I’m physically fit and am more than willing to help anyone with lawn work, house repairs etc in exchange for hunting/fishing knowledge. I also reload ammo and can build you a rifle round specific to your gun if that interests you!
I didn’t grow up in a hunting/fishing family and have been learning as much as I can from YouTube, but it only goes so far. It’d also be great to share some adventures with folks instead of always just being solo in the woods and on the water.

Welcome, fellow Oregonian who also likes fishing the dirtbag gear ;)

Just to set expectations appropriately: Steelheading is not what it once was, and salmon opportunities, while plentiful here, are pretty damn difficult to tackle on the fly rod in all but a few very specific cases. My fly rods mostly get used on carp and smallmouth locally.

Hi Jake, welcome back, from Tom in Walla Walla.

Welcome back. Anyone who was a friend of Ben is welcome in my boat.
I was stationed in Portland many years ago at the ANT Team. Probably one of the best gigs in the USCG.
Feel free to reach out. I can give you some info on SW trout fishing.

Gotcha, I had some fun with bass on a fly down in New Orleans. I have a kayak so I’ll try and find some ponds that hold the warm water species , thanks!

Awesome! Thanks! That does sound like a good gig. I did a camping trip with Ben and his gang of friends on the Yakima in the summer. Is that the closest river to fish this time of year?

You have the Deschutes, which is the go-to trout river for most around here along with the Metolius and a few other tribs there.

Some of the coastal rivers near Tillamook, like the Wilson, have some pretty surprising sea run cutty fishing in the summer that nobody seems to partake in.

Welcome back to Cascadia!

Yeah, head over to the Deschutes. Great place to start in OR. Metolius is perhaps closer and very beautiful, but can be a tough nut to crack.

Metolius is actually like an hour further
