Finally getting some Fall temps

We’ve been having a late summer around here and I’ve been waiting to hit my local lakes until they cool a bit. Last week the night temps started dropping so I did a couple exploration trips to “test the waters”. The C&R lake close to home had a surface temp in the mid 60’s so I only hit it for an hour or so to see if the fish were feisty or lethargic. I netted two and both fought well but tired quickly, so I’ll give them another week or so. The near by hike in lake was in the high 50’s and these fish were ready to rock. Big runs, jumps and good “tail splash” when released. Hopefully we will have a long extended Fall before things start freezing.

Wow, nice trouts!
 
It is Oct tomorrow , it has been a warm Sept as well in PNW - but the temps are finally just about getting down to fishable levels, time to start the Autumn fish fest!

Went back out this morning to the nearby C&R lake and was pleasantly surprised to find the surface temperature had dropped to 55 degrees. So, I fished for about three hours, had nine quality fish and a couple small 12-14 inch ones. Most were in the 18-19 inch range, fought well and swam off with a vengeance. Highlight of the morning was a 21” brown!

My last visit to your “nearby C&R lake” was in 2005. Does it still get splake? It was really good back then.

Not that I’m aware of. They do have some tigers in there. I think they are fazing out the browns, last year I was getting about 20% browns and tigers with the other 80% being rainbows. This is the first brown I’ve gotten all year and I fish this lake pretty regularly in the spring and fall.
 
Actually of the two I fish regularly, the deeper one cooled first. I think a lot has to do with the location and the amount of wind it gets. The area of the hike in lake is known for cold wind.
Here’s what a 50 mph cold wind did to the shoreline and the lake wasn’t frozen.
