Favorite fish of 2022

I like whitefish and this one was so pretty.

A challenging stalk set this apart, a big redband was just icing.

I probably caught fewer fish myself in 2022 than I have in many, many years.

Most of the most memorable fish for me were fish that other people caught.

I'll throw this one as my own most memorable fish just as a representation of the general concept of catching albacore on topwater flies. I landed 14 topwater albies this year, my most by a large margin. I also spent way more time with the floater than I have in years past. There's just something about being in 5000+ feet of open ocean and watching albacore murder topwater flies. I'm not a big topwater guy in most of the fishing I do but it has become my absolute favorite way to catch albacore

This one was definitely the coolest fish caught on my boat this year. Doubt I'll ever forget putting eyes on this one when I first saw it in the water. Definitely not expecting to encounter Dorado in Washington!

Probably one of these caught near the end of the last trip. Maybe even the one Nick is in the process of converting to loins. Had some tough catching days this year but everything clicked this day going 6 for 8 all on cast flies... and no marine mammals!

I'll add to my list with a similar shot. My new boat's first tuna blood on deck was such a special moment for me. 100+hrs of work put in to that boat to get it sea worthy, and it paid off :D

A satisfying moment, first rod built and first fish on it.

Then there was this surprise fishing a put-and-take pond for crappie. One of the winters from a 7 month prior stocking.
Funny how I can tell exactly what river that is based on how that fish looks. They have such a distinct look there, especially the huge tails.

2 sins with my favorite. #1, the one that got away. #2, it was on a gear rod. Got into a hot coho, while wading from a beach throwing a hoochie jig. Thing took multiple runs while breaching. I never did control it. I finally got it to the net but missed, inspiring it into another run. This time it shook the hook and was gone, flipping me off as it went...

I was thinking the same thing. That pic reminds me of a famous painting from that river back in the 70's.

Some of my absolute favorites of 2022 were coho caught casting on foot at my favorite walk-in program. Gear fishing for coho is good, clean fun

Edit: forgot a photo

2 fish stand out for me. First, my daughters first fish ever. It was on her Echo Gecko, caught with a purple chubby up top, while riding my shoulders in a high mountain lake (she also backpacked in on her own accord). No photos of the fish because I would have dropped her, but I do have this while fish was on. It was all of 6” but everyone was pumped.

Second was this 9” Brookie, from a high mountain lake in eastern oregon. I caught it in a fly I tied while on the shore of said lake with mountain goat hair and a jay wing that I found while hiking to the lake. Tied it with sewing thread from an emergency kit while holding the hook in my hand. Casted to cruising trout and landed this guy on the third cast. The fly only lasted the one fish. And yes I ate it and it was delicious.
