Father/Sons Summer 2025 Trip Ideas

Hey everyone, I’m looking for ideas on locations, accommodations, etc to take my Dad (73) and twin brother on a trip in mid to late July 2025. I have all the gear/experience to show up with confidence and guide them on any type trout/salmon/steelhead stream/river.

My ideal scenario is a house/cabin rental on a trout river we can step out and fish, with other rivers we can drive to within 30-60 minutes. Bed and breakfasts or lodges aren’t out of the question, but I’m hoping there’s a more affordable “do you own cooking and fishing” option. We have 5-6 days to play with, including travel.

Alaska is top on the list, with Idaho, Wyoming and Montana as lower 48 options. I’ve done a number of trips to Idaho and Montana over the years, so selfishly I’d prefer Alaska. I’m based in Oregon, my brother and Dad are east coast.

I’ve been researching Kenai and some areas outside Fairbanks. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I like Willow, Alaska, personally, for diy in Alaska. Talkeetna is nearby, but Willow isn’t so close as to put you in tourist land. Easy to get to, quiet, cheap, and good cabin-type places to stay. Many trouts and salmons and other fun species in that watershed.

I've had good times at Willow, but it's been in the slump the last two years, at least for the non-humpy salmons. Not sure how the trouts and graylings are. I've also only floated down to the mouth. Don't know much about the bank access. Super trippy area though. Very unique habitat for Alaska.

Fun fact: I took the photo he's using in his profile pic with the tuna
