There’s nothing better than the crisp, clear air and the distinctive smell of a mountain meadow turned crimson in September.

Gathering these little Huckleberry jewels full of flavor brings back nearly seventy years of memories… harvesting them with family, friends and hunting and fishing buddies through the years. It’s nice to know that some things don’t change much.

… they seem to be popular with everyone…

There’s a slow as molasses meandering stream that courses through this meadow and I’ve snuck up on some of its inhabitants in past years. Sometimes it’s nice just to watch these Westslope Cutthroat trout without disturbing them. In this spot they cruise slowly up and downstream looking for food to get them through the coming winter. I’m amazed they make it through to the next spring living in such a confining habitat.
I wouldn’t want to disturb them, it’s just such a very peaceful setting and it just wouldn’t seem quite right or satisfying to do so.
It won’t let me post the video of the trout so you’ll have to trust that they’re there.

It’s always worth watching for wild Gentians in these meadows.

It was nice while it lasted, but the next day the smoke blew in pretty heavily so we called it a trip and headed for home.
