Thought I'd start a thread on this platform & engine choice. Mine has the 3.5L with 10 speed transmission.

Here's my situation. Purchased a 2019 F150 FX4 Lariat with 92k about 1 year ago, it currently has 105k and is my (retired) daily driver. So I'm putting about 1k per month per year.

It's been trouble free until the tailgate quit working last Fall after hauling 3 loads of driveway gravel. Went to the local Ford dealership to have that looked (replace actuator $400) and while being inspected they noted a coolent leak.

Apparently this is at the driver's side turbo and will require a $1100 fix.

I'm fine with these repairs, but starting to wonder what's in my future.

I'm generally happy with this rig as it does everything I want from a 4x4 with a luxurious interior.

Considering what the average new car payment is nowadays, if it is going to cost you say $1,500 or so per year for repairs excluding standard maintenance I think you are in a good space. That might be the equivalent of two months payments on a new rig. Just my opinion of course and YMMV.

I'm still planning on a F-150 Lariat 4 door with the Ecoboost with twin turbos. Just a sexy truck! I might look for one with the coyote engine, that's to a number of folks on the forum.. Evan B for sure, but Breck and others.

I've had one new vehicle, my 2000 Toyota Tacoma V6 Extended cab 4x4.. loved it! New cars these days are at least twice as much and that definitely trumps inflation. Still, new will be considered, but most likely 2 to 5 years old. My Kia is a 2018, so I don't really want to go much older than that despite the cost.

Payments are crazy these days, especially if you don't have good or excellent credit. A friend of mine had to buy a car, her POS was dead and she got a loan, but for 29.99%.. she's refinanced it, it's been over a year and is paying $200 / month less and more principal. Sad but that's what it took to get into the car for her.. and she loves her new SUV and job (home healthcare)!

Luckily I'm not in that position and can wait for the right vehicle at the right time!

If you feel the transmission clunking on the downshifting into lower gears get rid of it quick. Mine went out at 70k. All of the f150 10 speeds my neighbors company had went out at 100k. They most likely fixed the problem with the newer ones but it was well known in the 2019 years. The new one they installed came with a 100k warranty while the original only came with a 60k warranty.

Do both turbos. I own a 3.5 with 160k on it. Did turbos at 100k. One failed the other didn't look great. Mine is a 14 with a 6 speed.

If I could go back I would have got the V8. You don't spend much more if any in fuel and gain longevity. Boosted motors don't last forever. That is unless it's my 7.3 power stroke. But that's Imt iron and a different story.

In the quest for Eco we made stuff that shifts way too much and fails. We were sold this stuff as eco but it's really planned failure to get you back to the dealership for another one.

Exactly why I'm collecting old ones 😂 now I'm having thoughts about hydra chipping my 7.3 or keeping it in grandpa / tractor mode.

This sinister decline in build quality plays into the future hands of john Q public owning nothing and just making a forever payment to someone. This is a great business model because repeat business is the key to long term business success. Musk is already pushing Tesla full self drive as a monthly subscription. Other OEM are thinking similar like monthly subscription to A/C or entertainment access or NAV. We consumers will embrace this change because we aren't coming up with $50k or $100k for a new pickup truck. We rent it and give it back if it breaks. To this generation of young kids cars will be valued like cell phones.

Boom…. Tech companies are at the forefront of this… control. Just a payment.

Run daily driver tunes and you're fine. The real benefit imho is the transmission shift programming. I have one. No regrets. I run an 80hp tune and drive conservatively. It's worth an extra 2 mpg.

I'm mechanical and understand the benefits of repairable tech. I'm basically ungovernable in that manner. New trucks are for people that don't get what's happening. I could pay cash tomorrow for the new rig if my choice. I won't cause it's a bad deal.

I will not own Apple, John Deere, Tesla, and many other auto makers. Right to repair is a big deal and the vast majority of the public are asleep or busy on facebot. And consumer protection? Non existent. Your government that is supposedly there to protect you is absent as well as bought and paid for. They all deserve what's coming. Count me out

Right to repair is a big issue across all consumer products. Sadly…we are loosing because of apathy and it’s our fault for not teaching our kids how to fix things. It’s sad when I help lift the neighbor kid’s bike into dad’s pickup so he can drive it to the bike shop for a flat tire! I think my girl is still single because there just aren’t many men out there.

Not much work needing done I can't do myself. I like figuring out how to work on my stuff. Not often I give up and go elsewhere. But I'd hook my boat up to it and drive to the Oregon coast and back right now. It's rock solid.
