End of the season blues

I'd argue that Oregon's year-round opportunities are even better. It's just that most of the worthwhile winter month fisheries are a bit of a drive for me, so I spend those months on other endeavors. Prefer saving my PTO and hall passes for trips to the ocean in the summer.
as a pdx'er, point out the winter worthwhile spots ! i am retired, but less motivated.... than i was in the past.

Fall fishing is about so much more than the fishing for me. But damn is it a nice to time to be camping on a river. Just this morning I had a flock of turkeys fly across the river looking to land where my cot happened to be situated. If you've seen a turkey fly you know they had a rough change of course. I'm just glad I didn't get shit on!

I just think this is the best time of the year to be spending time outdoors. I also happen to think rivers are the best place to spend that time.

Unless football is on, made it home for that train wreck of a win...

April?? Damn man. Not that I can talk much. When I was coaching youth football and basketball I had a few dry spells. Add in riding dirt bikes and mtn bikes along with being my youngest son's taxi for bmx racing a couple years there were a few long dry spells for sure.

Good luck with the races! I hear fly fishing is good recovery therapy. ;)

I know you're not a trout guy, but some of the best trout fishing of the year is just heating up...without the crowds.

I've also gotta get in one or two more musky trips in. It's the best time of year to bag a true giant.

I believe most of the best winter fishing is on the east side of the cascades, so being less motivated may not get you there.

Bingo. My issue isn't that there isn't fishing to be had, the barriers to entry just get higher. I've taken to saving my money through these months for the summer trips to the ocean instead of burning gas, PTO, hall passes, etc on fisheries that I've tried to click with but just don't.

Not to say I won't fish at all - I'll be in Bend in a couple weeks for a work thing and may meet up with an old friend for a blue line outing with him. Then I typically get to the Oregon Coast for a day or two of winter steelheading with another friend. Otherwise, I'm quite content with the other things I spend my time doing over the winter. I'm someone who hits things hard and tends to run into "burnout" territory, which is usually where I'm at by October. Time to recharge the batteries.

My winter steelhead fishing does not start until the first of the year. Time to get an old farts license and tag. Drive 5 miles to the fishing hole from my house. $3 to park, but since the truck has a disabled placard, it is free. Hardly any fishing in 2025, 2026 is working to be stronger so I can fish.

Fall fishing here continues , fished Strawberry lake yesterday . Wasn't on fire ,but caught several good rainbows ,and cutthroats in the 16-20" range . All on either white or black crystal buggers . That lake will freeze up here in a month , but there are a couple at lower elevation that will be fishable all winter . We fished out of the boat all winter this year ,should continue into this coming winter .

I think my hardcore fall season ended today. I gave it a good go this year….had some successes and some not so much.

I started out by focusing on tidewater silvers and thanks to those who shared a bunch of helpful hints over the last month or two, I went 4 for 5 πŸ₯³πŸ₯³

Poor numbers for the amount of time I put in but I learned a bunch and have a better foundation for next yearπŸ‘

I switched my focus to SRC when the tidewater coho run petered out on my home river…and the cutties kicked my butt. πŸ˜–.

The irony is that in years past I got a few each fall as a by catch when I was focused on upriver silvers. This year, when I change it up and decide to priortize cutts and walk past holding salmon, I pretty much get skunked …go figure πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Still I had a nice time walking the river and fishing what thought were text book waters…there just wasn’t anyone home.

Here are some pix from today’s Good Bye effort..

and if nothing else…I got to hang with my favorite river bird for a while today

….so yay….now I get to resume all the home maintenance stuff I’ve put off since August πŸ™„

I had the same set-up. Just wait for the spring gremlins! Figuring out what worked 5 months before and doesn't anymore. The year before I moved my boat's radar dome somehow got filled with water. I could hear the aperture rotating and pushing water before it died. The boat was covered by a tarp all winter. WTH?
