End of the season blues

This past week, I got in one more tuna trip and one more local salmon trip. Decided that will be a wrap for me for 2026. Typically, I'd have a few late summer run steelhead trips to do, but with the state of the runs and closures, that won't be a thing that happens this year.

Maybe @clarkman will talk me in to some walk-in stream trip or something, but otherwise, I'm feeling the realization that I may not fish again until April or so.

Spent the morning getting the boats ready for winter, including but not limited to intricate tenting for the covers.

Shit maybe I’ll be a functioning human by then.

awe buddy....there is no off-season.

Who's gonna figure out the pre-pre-pre-spawn capr fishery?

A major factor that got me addicted to fly fishing was that it was a 12-month season in WA. I fished for steelhead 12 months of the year. There were 164 streams in WA that were open to fishing for steelhead - because they hosted steelhead runs. That is why I never acquired a lot of experience with trout fishing until about the last 15 years or so.

Agreed. The variety of fisheries and year round fishing are my favorite thing about Washington. I don't know if I can ever bring myself to leave again to move somewhere that doesn't have year round fishing. The days are shorter, but some of my best days in the lakes and on the Sound have been in the colder months.

I'd argue that Oregon's year-round opportunities are even better. It's just that most of the worthwhile winter month fisheries are a bit of a drive for me, so I spend those months on other endeavors. Prefer saving my PTO and hall passes for trips to the ocean in the summer.

It's rough on people whose main recreational interest involves fishing, but exciting for those of us with many upcoming outdoor activity opportunities. Sometimes my fun gets in the way of my other fun.

That's where I'm at. I have plenty to keep me busy during the "offseason." In some ways, it's almost a relief. I had no real plans this past weekend and it felt so good.

From late October to June-ish is my busy running season. I have three half marathons between now and February, so my training for that ramps way up. Not exactly most peoples' idea of "fun," but I enjoy the challenge.

As you're no doubt well aware that those 'Type 2 fun' activities are increasingly important as one ages due to accelerating sarcopenia (age related wasting away of muscle mass) and maintaining cardio pulmonary fitness.

At my age of 75 I wouldn't be able to engage in any of my favored warm weather activities were I to remain sedentary in the flyfishing off season. Many of my former recreational cohorts had long ago begun the spiral downward....and a move to a retirement community where they had 'nothing to worry about' was a major contributor to their rapid decline.

Rust never sleeps. It's rather easy to "go gentle into that good night".

Oh I don't just do it in the offseason, it's all year. I just do a lot more in the "offseason." I strength train year round and do "maintenance runs" during my busy fishing season. I'm trying to stay semi-competitive when I do sign up for events.
