I won't again, that's for sure. Especially after building up the NFC blank and seeing how sloppy the ferrules were. I wonder if the Edge rod will be any different. With so many very good and outstanding rods on the market these days, why do business with someone or company that doesn't or delays filling orders?

First impression as I strung it up with my normal 6wt line was “ok, this feels pretty nice. Maybe it’ll be worth the drama.”
The thing lasted an entire three casts before exploding. That’s including the two roll casts to get line out there. What a piece of shit!!!
Time to find out how their customer service is. Oh wait, I already know…
Edit: I should add that the wrapping/workmanship wasn't really any better than what's pictured above. To put it in perspective - I've built three rods and can wrap as well, if not better, than what I received.
Those are factory wraps? Is it an optical illusion or are the wraps different lengths on the closest snake guide?First impression as I strung it up with my normal 6wt line was “ok, this feels pretty nice. Maybe it’ll be worth the drama.”

Looks like a ferrule wrap combined with a guide foot wrap. Those are factory wraps? Is it an optical illusion or are the wraps different lengths on the closest snake guide?
I think you're right, thanks!Looks like a ferrule wrap combined with a guide foot wrap.
Yep, ferrule/guide combo wrap.I think you're right, thanks!
And let me tell ya, the action and feel of the two roll casts I got was the stuff that dreams are made of. Even the crunch of the blank as it shattered behind me had a certain quality that you just don’t get out of a mass produced MIC product. I’d gladly spend my money and endure months of wait time to experience one minute of fishing bliss with a blank like this againYeah dude, but you're forgetting, that is a Gary Loomis blank
As a custom rod builder I have delt with many different rod blank makers. I specialize in fly rods and build for the most part with NFC and Batson. As mentioned earlier I get my NFC blanks direct from them, the Batson blanks I get from Utmost. Batson like most blank suppliers have their blanks made in China to their specification, I will say they are a very blank and have a good warranty. These Chinese factories are huge making many different brandss in the same plant mass producing and are able to produce 100's if not 1000's a day. NFC blanks are made 100% in America in Woodland Wa. as most of you know, they also source their materials here in America as much as possible. I toured their plant and found their production process labor intensive but each step is touched by a human hand and each person has to sign off on their step. NFC blanks go through I rigourous testing process, a process I don't believe the Chinese manufacturers go through, I could be wrong.I bought a couple of Edge Rods (https://edgerods.com/) last year and have finally fished with both. Thought I’d provide my thoughts here. Both are Archetype models; a 1267 Spey and a 907 single hander. The Archetype series is their basic fly series with cork grips. Edge sells two higher end fly rod lines, the Gamma Alpha and Gamma Beta, which are roughly double the cost and look pretty nice. But those come with woven graphite grips, which is not my preference. I have not held or tried a rod from either of those lines.
Edge is a relatively new company that uses blanks from North Fork Composites. Edge sells only direct to consumer, and I feel that their primary target market is gear fishing, like bass, walleye, etc. Fly rods seem to be an afterthought. The B2C model means that their rods are sold at a significant discount vs. a rod sold through a fly shop. Of course, unless you live near Woodland WA or have a friend that owns the rod you are considering, you can’t test cast them. I chose to order them sight unseen since the prices were so good and I really didn’t feel like driving down to Woodland. They are intended to be workhorses, not finesse rods. Just needed decent tools for salmon, steelhead and bull trout.
Lead time – The Spey rod was ordered November 20th and delivered April 2, about 4.5 months later. I got the rod, but not the rod sock or tube. The rod sock came a few months later, but I still don’t have the tube.
The single-hander was ordered December 12 and delivered in July. Again, no rod tube, but had the rod sock. They keep promising the tubes, but nothing so far after around 9 months.
To be fair, the web site said that it could take a couple of months for delivery, but the actual times were significantly longer. Also, when I checked on things, the customer service person was very nice, but couldn’t do a lot to speed things along.
Workmanship – Both rods are matte black, unsanded, with robin’s egg blue wraps. I like the unsanded blanks. Not a huge fan of the blue wraps, but not a big deal.
The wraps on the Spey were a bit rough (see pic). This was typical of the wraps throughout the rod. They are serviceable (I’m not going to lose a guide) but not particularly craftsman-like. The wraps on the single hander were much better. Maybe they are getting a better handle on QC as the operation matures.
You can buy the LMX blanks from North Fork Composites for about $100, so if you build rods, you might want to consider doing it yourself. I may go that direction next time.

Cork is decent and grips are comfortable. Here's a pic of the grip on the Spey rod.

Performance – I like casting both rods very much. The Spey is a serious gun. I’m not a great Spey caster, but it’s got a fast action that allows me to throw 80 feet with ease. In fact, I generally found myself having to dial back the power when steelhead fishing on the Seymour River in BC. I’ve had some pretty good Spey casters try it, and the general opinion is that it’s a comfortable rod and fun to cast. After a bit of experimentation, I landed on a 550 gr Skagit Max head, which is larger than I had expected. Unfortunately, It’s very similar to the line I throw with my Sage 14’ brownie, which is rated as a 9-wt, and my Sage 1268 greenie. So, I haven’t gained much versatility vs. the rest of my quiver and you should consider this if you are looking for a lighter wt Spey rod.
The single hander is also nice to cast. Light in hand and balances well with an older Lamson Litespeed 4 reel. I’ve cast it with 7wt type III sinking and floating lines, and it’s very comfortable and smooth. Action on the faster end, but not stiff at all. Seems fairly true to line wt., maybe preferring a slightly heavy line.
Bottom line: Performance is much better than I would expect from another rod at a similar cost, and it’s made in the PNW. Seriously long lead times and still waiting on the rod tubes, so not great on prompt delivery. Workmanship serviceable, but not great. If they get the wraps a bit tighter from now on, they’ll be making progress. Cost of each was about $225 on sale, so on balance, I got about what I expected from the cosmetics. Unless you are highly fixated on cosmetics, these are fine rods. Very comfortable to cast and enjoyable to fish. I expect to give them quite a bit of use.
I’d be interested to hear from other folks who have purchased fly rods from Edge.
My experience took 8 months to unfold, with next to no communication from them until I located both Edge's owner's and Gary Loomis's personal email addresses and contacted them directly. I never did get a tube sock. The first rod arrived broken, wrapped too tightly with rubber bands (since, duh, no tube sock), and when the replacement arrived SIX MONTHS LATER, the end of the tube was caved in. The rod (8'4" 4 weight) is just okay and now serves to stake up my tomatoes.I ordered an eight weight during the Fourth of July sale they had and received it in about two weeks. Beautiful rod. Got the letter saying a tube was forthcoming, have not seen it yet, and would have bought the rod at that price without a tube frankly, but I will wait patiently, I have other tubes I could use.
I watch people who are quick to be confrontational, it can be a quick way to complicate something if the person they are dealing with is someone who reacts to that sort of thing. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, and kindly communicate what I am looking for to see if there might be a solution. My wife is more of the reactionary type, and I have seen situations downgrade rather quickly when someone pushes her buttons. I don't know what happened with either of you, but it sounds like folks are having very different experiences, and it might be worth looking inward.
I have ordered two rods from them, and like I said the first came rather quickly, the second took about eight months. I sent a couple emails asking if there was any news, the replies came slowly, like two to three weeks after my inquiry. When you order one you can create an account, and there is some info there about where in the production schedule your rod is. I'm over a year from the first order, have and like the rod, but have not received a tube for either rod as of yet. I trust they will come, as they continue to assure me, and I have tubes that will work so it's not a deal breaker for me.My experience took 8 months to unfold, with next to no communication from them until I located both Edge's owner's and Gary Loomis's personal email addresses and contacted them directly. So, no, I was not quick to be confrontational, but had I not become so, I would never have received my fly rod.
