I was planning on a backpacking trip this week, but when I saw the favorable weather on Hwy 24 in BC I decided to ditch the holiday weekend crowds here and head further north with my boat and float tube. I left early Wednesday morning and arrived at Lost Horse Lake Rec Site in the Meadow Lake chain before noon (the fishing camp isn’t open yet, but they were getting ready for first guests next week). I got camp set up and headed out to my favorite lake to see how it was fishing. I ended up C&R 15 the first afternoon with the biggest at 25"...great start.

Thursday I tried a new "shrimpy" lake that is nearby, but not part of the Meadow chain. It's not too big, so perfect for the float tube. I caught a handful including a few 19" fish, so it is definitely worth checking out for those that like to bring their own float tubes up to Meadow Lakes. I fished my favorite lake again in the afternoon and this time it was more stingy with only 3 fish caught.

Friday I hiked out to check out Summit Lake (didn't fish it), which used to be part of the Meadow Lake chain before logging killed it off. I saw a moose cow and yearling, but no sign of fish...it was early, so maybe they just hadn't woken up yet. Then I tried a lake in the chain that I had only been to once before. It took a short row across a lake and a hike through a bog to get there, but it was worth it. I fished for 6 hours and caught 65 rainbows in the 14"-18" range...it took me 5 fish caught and a few more bobber downs just to get through my sandwich at lunch.

Saturday I spent my lake full day on my favorite lake and picked up 8 with the biggest at 21". I also fished Lost Horse Lake that night, caught 17 in a few hours, and enjoyed a great sunset.

Sunday I hit the new float tube lake again and caught 17 including one that hit 20"...it was just starting to get its spawning colors. After about 3 hours on the lake I headed back to Lost Horse, packed up, and hit the road to avoid Monday traffic.

Majority of fish were caught under the indicator on size #14 chironomids...pattern didn't seem to matter. I'm looking forward to my planned annual trip in July.
