Ok folks - how about catnip? Keeps the skeeters away, and might attract a friendly interaction with a mountain lion or bobcat:

The tradeoff? No bites and scratching …. Great!!! But, not sure I want a stoned cougar playing with me. Slowing devouring my digits and pouncing on me but playing with me too. That would be a painfully slow death.

Do we know that cougars and bobcats are affected by catnip in the same way as domestic cats?

Yes, but with some variations. Cougars and bobcats have the same olfactory receptors and genetic sensitivity to catnip (which contains the chemical nepetalactone) as domestic cats. When affected, they exhibit similar behaviors like rubbing, rolling, licking, and purring.
