Combo Questions

Hello again. So I began my fly fishing journey recently and really like it. My birthday is coming up and I don’t really know what else to ask for so I will get another fly combo.

My question is do I use my currently combo (8wt lift & liquid -7+) for light salt/ brackish (inshore/beach/brackish canals) or do i use the new combo for it (danielsson FW and budget salt rod)

Or should I kind of mix and match, use 8wt lift with danielsson reel and then get a new 6 weight rod for the liquid -7+?
 
Because you have an 8 wt a lot of people will tell you to get a 6 weight and that is not bad advice. However for beach fishing I think a 7 weight is best - light enough to cast all day and can handle some wind and cast some larger flies.
 
I think your strategy in getting a 6 is perfect.

I like 6s for moderate to low wind, and although I have a couple 7s I usually jump to the 8. The 8 can punch through moderate to heavy wind and land some sizeable fish. A 7 is a good cookie cutter if you don’t like switching rods.

6s are also fun on rivers and lakes for resident fish as an indicator or streamer rod. Then for anadromous fish, the 8 makes a great tool.
 
You live in Florida (Miami), so what do you want to target with your new fly rod combo? Asking for advice from a Pacific Northwest fly fishing website might not be the best strategy?

sorry i just found this forum first when i started looking at fly gear didn’t take into account it was a PNW site

There are a few here that are from Florida or lived, and some even guided down there.

@albula for one, very knowledgeable for all things fishing in Florida!
 
I have fly fished several times in Florida in the Jupiter area. I have used 6, 7 and 8 wt outfits. I think it will depend upon what you are targeting. I was targeting snook by lighted docks and all the ones I caught were about 3-5 lbs and I also caught lookdowns and jack crevalles. Most of the jacks I caught were small, but one time I caught about an 8 pounder on a 7 wt and felt a little overmatched. My sister and her husband live in the Naples area and I would probably use an 6 wt or 8 wt depending on what I was targeting and the wind conditions. I also have a 10 wt that I got for targeting dolphinfish, false albacore, or black tuna.

yeah i just decided to get another 8wt… i don’t get tired casting all day and why not have the backbone
