Columbia Smallmouth Bass

Pez Vela

Life of the Party
Most of the water East and West Washington is too warm for trout, so I made a run upriver this morning and terrorized the smallmouth bass. Beautiful day for it, and the bass were hungry! If you had one fly… make it a chartreuse and white baitfish.IMG_2183.jpeg
This damn bee terrorized me…until he went for a swim. 😁IMG_2184.jpeg
Nice spot..IMG_2185.jpeg

Look at the lack of Stars and Stripes on this bass. Google says it’s because of hanging out on a sandy bottom. Interesting… but I caught other bass close to that spot with the usual tiger stripes. Almost looks like a different species…thoughts?

Many of the tribs to the Columbia have good smallmouth populations. The biggest tributary of them all-the Pend Oreille River-has massive populations near where I live in NE Washighton. River smallmouth that are raised in the current and deal with spring flooding are particularly strong and make for excellent fly rod fare. As near as I can tell the Pend Oreille is one of the most underfished rivers around. It is massive, second in size only to the Columbia and can be intimidating to fish but definitely worth putting in the effort to learn. Crawdad patterns on a fast sinking line are a sure fire way to get started where I fish.

Do you know if any outfits guide that stretch of the Pend Oreille for fly fishing?
