Colorado Winter Fly Fishing Alternative

This is an ice fishing forum, right?

I moved to Gunnison from Seattle for graduate school this past fall and after weeks in the negatives, we're slowly getting some warm weather and the river is healing. I think the warm front that swept through Colorado also hit Wyoming and Montana. After the warm front we got a cold snap and about a foot of snow which provided some great skiing last weekend. But before all that, the only real option to fish was on the ice. So we got ourselves some mini rods and drilled holes with some nice results. On this day (back in late January) It was -9 when I woke up and around 0 when we got to blue mesa. It warmed up to around 20 midday. I threw on a fly that I had purchased from fulling mill called a "ditch witch" and it did the trick. We caught browns and rainbows but didn't find any of the storied big lakers. As far as depth we're estimating that we were around 12 - 15 deep and jigged just above the bottom.

I think we're gonna throw down on an insulated hut for next season. Here are some pictures:
