I tie the top portion of my dries using colors that I can easily see. In particular, parachute posts and small foam terrestials get a white, or orange tuft/foam piece. I use those items so I can see the flies. Very small dries are often hard to ID floating in moving water and the contrast high color tops makes it much easier to follow the fly as it moves across the water.
I am just wondering what the consensus (if there is one) is regarding the top color. Do fish really see the high color post/foam and/or does it make any difference in the attractiveness of the fly? I suspect the top color is just for the fisher rather than the fish, but am curious what others think. It won't change how I tie, but as the season has effectively ended where I live, I can indulge myself with philosophical discussions.
