College Football 2023

The Committee was in a no-win position - their mission statement is to choose the 4 best teams, not the 4 teams with the best records - I think one is hard pressed to argue FSU is better than either Alabama or Texas. As for the FSU statement, nonsense (last night's win was hardly "dominant"), the playoffs expand next year, all this will be forgotten and moot.

Edit: I also find it quite humorous that all those who were clamoring for chaos (ie, wins and losses like occurred) are now screaming about the injustice of it all).

I'll be rooting for the Huskies

(Go Chiefs!!!!)

Of course if it was an unbeaten Kansas team that won the Big 12 Championship and was supplanted by a one loss Bama or Georgia you’d fell the same way…

Speaking of Georgia vs FSU. If FSU wins 😬

But how many players from both sides will opt out to avoid injury and prep for NFL?
I wonder if NIL money will pay a role in this? Does a player's NIL deal include their participation (or extra cash) for a bowl game? Or will bowls step up to pay separate NIL deals for players (see interesting article here)? This could change the calculations of a player who might otherwise skip a bowl game.

That is beside the point, yes, as a fan I could feel slighted and pissed, but my argument stands - the Committee was charged with picking the 4 best teams and I have heard no solid argument from any knowledgeable/credible observer that FSU is a better team than Texas or Alabama.

Good point. Never thought about that.

Did they pick the four best teams?…if I was a betting man, I’d take Oregon over Texas or Bama…and I’d take Georgia over Texas…

Except they didn’t lose any games 😜

In the end it’s about winning.

I’m so glad that UW is better than Georgia 😅

I have no dog (see what I did) in the fight, but UW beat a top 10 team twice and played in what we are told was the best conference. How many top 10 teams did Georgia beat?

I wouldn't, not with their defenses - Ducks couldn't beat the Huskies, whose defense I don't think measures up to either.

Anyways, this is the folly of the ranking and "tournament" setup - someone will always feel jobbed. Committee made it's decisions, I have no burning passion for any of the teams, so I could really care less, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy what I hope will be good games.

cheers

Ducks couldn’t outscore the most prolific passing offense in college…but neither Texas or Alabama has played as dynamic an offense as the Ducks this year…it would have made for an interesting game

A couple of thoughts.

1) If Travis really made that big of a difference for FSU, he should be a shoe-in for the Heisman.

2) This sets a horrible precedent for player safety. How many injuries are going to be ignored, hidden, or quickly (half assidly) rehabbed because injuries will affect playoff chances?

Whether right or wrong, the FSU AD had to make a statement. If he had not done so, he would have lost support from his students, staff, and the alumni.

The very nature of the process is rife with opportunities for controversy! That is the nature of the beast! Sure, we could argue that Georgia, FSU, or even Liberty deserved a shot, and next year they might have been included, but for 2023, the die is cast. Lets now sit back and enjoy the games, there are sure to be some barn-burners!

Not in power 5 conference tho
Oh, so the conference/SoS dooo matter - the bylaws/mission statement say nothing about having to be Power 5 - below are the Mission Statement and selection criteria:

1. MISSION
  • The selection committee’s task will be to select the best teams, rank the teams for inclusion in the playoff and selected other bowl games and then assign the teams to sites.

2. PRINCIPLES
  • The selection committee will select the teams using a process that distinguishes among otherwise comparable teams by considering:
    • Conference championships won,
    • Strength of schedule,
    • Head‐to‐head competition,
    • Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory), and,
    • Other relevant factors such as unavailability of key players and coaches that may have affected a team’s performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance.
