College Football 2023

Some fans need to realize that only one team wins the whole thing.
Doesn’t mean all the rest are losers.
If you’re good enough to get to the playoffs what is in store for you is a loss in your last game - unless you’re good enough to win the whole thing.
Keep it real 😉

I agree, but it seems the timeline to build a program and start having success is certainly getting shorter.
With some of the coaching changes, it will be interesting to see how many players hit the transfer portal when it opens up on 12/5.
Recruiting the portal has become a big deal now.

Shit yes. I think the trend is win now and nothing else matters. History - allegiance - program development - down the shitter.
The game ain’t going back

Speaking of future college players.
It’s championship week for Washington HS football.
I miss the days when ROOT broadcast the Championship games. I always enjoyed watching them.

Well, as I feared. Once the ten teams bailed out of the Pac 12 leaving the Pac 2, coaches and players would start going elsewhere.

The best coach we've had in decades, Johnathan Smith, is leaving the Beavs for Michigan State. And of course taking additional coaches with him. And who wouldn't? He's a great coach and the conference was pulled out from under him... not to mention the players.

WSU is in the same boat. It wouldn't surprise me if their coach also bails.

Bad, bad deal .

I like Johnathan Smith a lot as a coach and the way his teams played. They were never an easy out like they used to be, especially the past few years. His style of ball is perfect for the Big 10 in my opinion.
All coaches have ego, though he isn’t the type to openly express it. It bet he feels he can coach at the same level as Lanning, DeBoer etc. With the PAC 12 blowing up and a MW type conference in the future, I think he knew it was time to go. Leaving his alma mater had to be a difficult decision.

If you have a bunch of NIL money, you can clean up in the portal.
Just buy all the players you can.

As has recruiting your existing players, to keep them from entering the portal.

NIL money and threatening to enter the Portal to get it...
College free agency.

Downward spiral
I hope OSU and the Cougs land on their feet 🤞🏼

It's called what have done for me lately. Win or go away. Case in point....Boise St. fired Arevalo a couple weeks ago and now they're playing for the conference championship. I think they jumped the gun on that one. he was a good def coord. at Oregon.

Perhaps Washington HS has a YouTube channel? I watched a few of the Tigers home games that way.

I "used to" like coach Smith. Leaving a team and a conference on the ropes, is a chicken shit move in my opinion. And yes to a varying degree, I am pissed at all the programs that bailed on the PAC 12.

you should be pissed at the Pac12 commish. he's the one who fucked up the TV deal (like really bad) initially....not saying things wouldn't have ultimately turned out how they did, but THAT definitely did not help.

re: former OSU coach: I'm just guessing that it was a really difficult decision for him...but, like many of us, things are gonna boil down to money when it's all said and done. Big 10 (or will it be 20 when it's all said and done) has much more (thanks to their commish) than Pac12....or 2....

I wish I had the problem of having to decide between $2 million and $5 million a year (numbers used as an example since I have no idea what the actual numbers are nor do I know what additional benefits were also offered). Shoot, even if money were equal, why would anyone want to stay on a sinking ship?

I agree the new commissioner didn’t help, but it was the presidents and chancellors that ultimately caused the demise of the PAC 12.
First they kept Luxury Larry Scott in power for way too long then got greedy by turning down ESPN’s initial contract offer, thinking they could get more.
Once USC and UCLA left and they lost the LA tv market, the writing was on the wall. Sorry, but San Diego St wasn’t going to make up for the loss of the two LA schools had they joined the conference.
As far as coaches salary goes, I believe Smith was making $4.8 million per year and would have gotten a raise had he stayed. Not bad coin for Corvallis. 😉 Not sure what he is getting at MSU, but I’m sure it is well north of what he was making at OSU.
