College Football 2023

Those are served in Eugene, right ?

There is an interesting review of the new NIL landscape in college athletics in today's New York Times:

"How Rich Donors and Loose Rules Are Transforming College Sports".

To summarize, the donor collectives that pay the players are outside the universities. "The average starter at a big-time football program now takes in about $103,000 a year". While the NCAA is still prohibits explicit "we will pay you X if you play for Z State", they can't police it. Some donations to these donor collectives are funneled through "charitable organizations"; this means that the donations are tax deductible. The athletes who are paid by these organizations are supposed to do some activity that supports the charitable organization in return.
Steve

Oh wow. This is adding new responsibilities for the head coach in not only trying to buy recruits, but retain existing players with $$$, and explain why RB1 gets $$$$ and RB2 gets $$. Headache.

🤔
And could those "charitable organizations" and NIL athletes be low hanging fruit for getting some "love" from nearly 20,000 new IRS hires in 2024, with a large number of the new staff going toward enforcement?

I'm a UW alum, therefore a Husky fan. As always, the call sign is "Fvck the Ducks!" Meaning I invariably favor whichever team is playing the Ducks, be it Wahzoo, USC, even ND. There is no team I want the Ducks to beat.
As an alum of dogville it's your job to hate the Ducks. Equally as a Duck alum, it's my job to hate the dawgs. It's huck the fuskies here. It's what makes the rivalry fun. So.........you won this year but in a happy non personal friendly sense......Go Fvck yourself. Hopefully there will be a rematch. The Ducks beat the Cougs tonight but I'm wondering, how did they only score 6 at home against Arizona but score 22 against the Ducks on the road. Cam Ward is a very good quarterback and every team they face the rest of the season should worry. Especially the Huckin Fuskies.

You sound conflicted... I also am a Husky alum, but don’t follow football closely.

The UW game is so hard to watch. Too many turnovers by UW. AZ State seems to have the dawgs number. They have won 11 of last 13 games I believe....

'Dawgs are 'Cougin it tonight! Fumbles, interceptions, sloppy tackling, lack of hustle and a quarterback that looks like a backup rather than a Heisman candidate. And referees right out of Father Murphy's School for the Blind...!

I dislike the 7:30 kick, stupid TV contracts. Fell asleep in the latter part of the 3rd quarter. Really expected to get up and see ASU had won. Tough conference, any/every Saturday. Still a lot of football left. Go dawgs.

Winning without an offensive td . They played like dawg poo...

Yes they did.
It had all the potential for a letdown game.
Opponent with a poor record coming off a big win then playing at night. They also always seem to play poorly against ASU for some reason. Kudos to ASU and how they played in a tough environment.
The good thing being they stayed in it and found a way to win. They can’t all be beautiful.
They have a lot to clean up and I personally think it was a good wake-up call for them to have a game like that. Play like that against a better quality opponent and that is a loss.

They will drop in the rankings.

I'm with Tom regarding late evening starts. It was closer to 8:00 than 7:30 by the time of kickoff. Once again I fell asleep during the 3rd quarter, with ASU ahead 7 to 3. Figured the Huskies lost; then I woke up around 11:30 or so to see a score of 15 - 7. I apparently missed the best part of the game.

F!@#$%^&*()++!!!

I am never awake at the end of those 7:30 starts, to be honest, I don't even try anymore.
🙂
