College Football 2023

How about this:
Kid is flunking HS chemistry and algebra.
Schools have academic standards for athletes to remain eligible. 2 F’s won’t hack it. Pressure put on teachers because the lack of academic accountability has cost Bobby a lot of $$$. Then what?

This could get ugly real fast
Yeah, teachers pressured to give passing grades to kids whose academics aren't up to athletic academic standards, more often than they already do to just affirm compliance with the basic education law and to bump up scholastic ratings.
Cutthroat competition for Grade School & Youth League team booster clubs in addition to existing High School booster clubs for prime street corner and exclusive shopping center space for car washes, bake sales, and lemonade stands.

Considering some are already getting paid in cryptocurrency, identifing the source of the NIL money might pose issues also.
This will be taking a while to sort out is my guess. Lawsuits, court rulings and such will take a few years probably. In order to formulate the new rules effectively, those rules will have to be broken and the loopholes/vagaries fixed...just like always, if there is a system the first thing that happens is someone tries to game the system.

It will be interesting to see where NIL goes in the future. Will it end up being performance based?
Say the starting QB gets a million dollar NIL deal, plays like shit and gets benched. Does the NIL have the opportunity to re-negotiate the deal?
Similar to the NFL model, we'll cut you if you don't take a pay cut. Time will tell.

I know a lot of kids have some type of representation. Regardless of that, one thing I hope the schools are doing is bringing in folks to give seminars on how not to blow your money as well as save and invest it. Some could be set for life even without much of a NFL career.
I like this approach. I've heard him on the radio a few times and enjoyed listening to him.

Good points
Exposing how shitty it is

I’m not one for a bunch of lawsuits and conspiracy theories, but I have to admit it would be interesting to see the communications if there are any, especially between ESPN and the committee and its members.
SF

There's an old joke about committees. It goes.... a camel is a horse made by a committee. I wonder if Mike Leach made that up.

Good article in today's paper about Rome Odunze who I think is the best receiver in the country. Just cuz of the many amazing catches he made while being closely covered. He was a "dude".

Yes the safety was a smart and wise play.

I was talking about the play before the safety… pig pile on qb sneak and talking about Army’s prevent D and allowing Navy big chunks of yardage on simple hitch plays. Army was giving them big huge 12+ yard cushions.
Yeah they were. It's like the corner backs didn't come to play. And that sucked. Let's hope they fix it for next year.

Not just football. Iowa's Caitlin Clark is making 750K in NIL (which doesn't cost her school a dime) hooping for Iowa, which generates 60M a year in revenue off hoops. A senior, if Caitlin enters the WNBA draft next year, her rookie salary would be capped at 75K so she would take a 90% pay cut. So no surprise if she stays out of the draft and enrolls in graduate studies to keep on hooping for NIL bank.
As to college football, the Power Five conferences alone generate 3.3B a year in revenue.
While the NFL, which generates over 18B in revenue, doesn't contribute a dime to college football, just scoops the cream off the top 1x a year.
NIL for student athletes? Decades overdue.

After an extremely disappointing last season, having a terrible defense and now this, Riley must be really enjoying himself at USC.
SF

Who can blame him? With next years SC schedule including LSU, Michigan, Penn State, Washington and Notre Dame, things won't go well for Lincoln Riley's Colander Defense. They gave up an average of 35 points a game this year and even a Heisman Award winning quarterback couldn't compensate for their defensive incompetence. For a kid just starting out, knowing you are going to have to put up an average of 42 points a game against top competition is a handicap from the get go. Better to join the top competition.
