Close to Home Landscapes

Another single day weekend spent hiking. Lower elevation this week to try and find more wildflowers in bloom. Hit a section of trail we had not previously hiked. Mostly second growth forest to start with more older trees mixed in as we got further out.

We got into some great rock formations and monolithsA84AD4BE-7395-4C0E-B396-20665B99BC00.jpeg

We found more Phantom orchids than I have ever seen in a day. This plant is considered rare but I know of several areas they inhabit.

Not many open landscape shots, but it was a beautiful varied hike in the woods.61C01020-5BA4-4E14-B246-0A17BA649BCD.jpeg

Happy to see others joining in!

Got out for another day hike today. It is peak Tiger Lily (Lilium columbianum) season in the high(5000+’) meadows. Off year for the Bear Grass which is the dominant plant in the meadows, they bloom every third year, we saw a few but most are going to pop next yearFE081748-AD2D-4D86-93F9-D9E00A91B8D8.jpeg
Density doesn’t show in pictures, and even on foot you could only see color for a certain radius around you in the mid day sun.

I am a sucker for Pentstemon

Plenty of Wood Betony, Paint brush, and Mountain Cats-Ear as well.

I did find what I came in search of the Washington Lily( Lilium washingtonianum), named after Martha who is said to have been a “looker”. This is one of the best smelling things you will ever come across!

A short hike today, just above 5000’, hour and a half from home with 10 miles of gravel.

This burned 2 years ago. Last year the recovery was looking good, this year even better for the meadows, but more trees have given in to the stress.

It will be interesting to see how the meadows and woodland interface is established. Many to most of the old trees have been killed, but seedlings are established.

I have never seen such quantity and size of Washington lilies
