I would start by saying that not only do Australians not know anything about salmon fishing, they don't even know WTF a salmon is:

A salmon is distinctly not related to a herring. Luckily, this can be fixed, and dirtbag methods just so happen to be exactly the right approach. You should go fish for salmon. I recommend a very, very sparsely dressed largish fly hooked through the lips of a small-medium sized herring. When you catch a salmon, pull the herring out of its mouth and compare the two fish very closely. Hold them. Look at all sides. Take pictures of you have to. Dissect if you have to. Take scale samples. Have your dad bring this info back to AUS and disseminate widely.

"Australian Salmon" is quite the doozy, but Americans are in no position to judge; you guys don't know what a trout is and they're actually native here. 😛

I know your dad is not into watercraft but a trip with Mike Sturza for musky on Mayfield in his large fly friendly luxury sled may be a cool thing for a father son outing. It's maybe a little further than what you're after but two is a good number for the boat and I guarantee you will at least see a bunch of fish and get follows. How bout that, guaranteed action? At any rate just an alternative thought that might get the juices flowing in another direction and Mike will handle the hard parts. All you do is show up.
