Chicken throwing season

Help out a novice bug chucker.....What ya catching with that hatched Easter egg?
Oh you don't catch anything with these chicken flies. I mean, I hope to catch a musky, but you know.... Well, if you've fished for musky you know. Don't fish for musky. Escape while you can! 😁

May have had a chicken eater today, although it also could've been a big mama smallie. Didn't see it, but sure felt it!
I went to a busy lake that has great smallies, but wanted to check out a few new carp and musky spots. The water is a bit high. Weird how just 1 foot in a lake like that can change some spots.
I had 5 or 6 legit shots at capr, but blew 2 or 3 and the others just didn't eat. I also spooked about 10 with the boat since I just couldn't see them before getting too close. These early fish aren't dark from the sun yet so really tough to see. They're also the exact color of the bottom right now. It gets easier in June, but right now it was rough. The chop from the wind and the 27 other boats that were out there when I launched didn't help either.

When I wasn't standing on the bow just holding my 8wt and looking for invisible fish (the bass guys probably thought I was crazy) I was chucking chickens with the 11wt while standing behind the helm trying to learn the side view of my Garmin Striker Vivid 7SV. I think I learned a little bit. Pretty sure I actually did see a musky on the darn thing. I need to go to Mayfield and try it. It would be good to see how a fish, that I can confirm is there, looks on the screen.

This dude came out of a very musky looking stump to take off the skunk. He was only about 12", but had no issues hitting a 9" fly. 🤘

Also saw a giant mama smallie on a nest. She was probably 5#. Biggest smallie I've ever seen in the water.

Not sure if I'll try carp on this lake on a Sunday again. Just too many people. Sunny week days or go somewhere else.

At least another 27 boats on that lake Sunday too! Made for ssslllooowww fishing. We were targeting bass but with fly and gear. There were 2 other members on boat (@Kfish and @mtskibum16) so wanted to limit the number of big barbed clousers flying around at any given time. One on the fly (small mouth) and one on gear (lmb) for me. Nothing large. Slower than last weekend for sure.

I did get a shot at this bad boy on the fly too. We spotted him feeding, I made perfect cast and…….just kidding, snagged him in the tail accidentally, blind casting with a crankbait :). It was a hoss though. Makes me want to start actually targeting them with a fly there.

And it's a mirror! Nice cast. 😁 Look at that wrist! Glad you got your crankbait back.

Me too. I was standing on the swim deck of my boat to give everyone as much room as possible when my crankbait snagged him. Had to gingerly step back in the boat so he did not pull me overboard…ha. For a bit we thought it might be a big musky but unfortunately no. We did have a certified eat by a musky boat side on a paddle tail too. That was cool to see. Unfortunately no bite leader since we were targeting bass so he made quick work of the leader and was gone.

I have pondered that. Not sure how enjoyable the casting would be. 😁
I've tried flies in the past with the Pacchiarini's dragon tails....note past tense.
