Can you spot AI photos?

I think it's becoming increasingly important to be able to use critical thinking skills in looking at photos. It's becoming very easy to manipulate people into believing AI-generated photos, especially through social media.

Someone built a website that lets you "play a game" of sorts in looking at two side-by-side images that are similar, and guessing which one is real vs AI.

I did ok - got most of them but really stumbled when it came to the plants/flowers.

Give it a shot and post your score. I think we should all be doing these types of things to at least raise awareness. I've seen some very obvious AI photos fooling a lot of people, so anything we can do to keep awareness up is important.

Now... maybe @Josh @Billy and I need to do a similar quiz with fish photos

Some of the 'deep fake' AI generated videos of well regarded and very reputable medical professionals and celebrities are being used to scam people by hawking snakeoil cures for horrific diseases like cancer and dementia. The videos are incredibly realistic.

I thought I was pretty good at spotting clanker images, but also ended up at 75%. Some are super obvious, but others are very good. The future of misinformation is going to be wild. People already fall for AI stuff, and it's only getting better.

I also hit 75%. In general the AI images tend to look "too perfect," but it's clearly not easy to tell. And it's just going to get better. Reality is under assault in so many ways.

I got 85% but also struggled with the floral pics.

Interesting challenge. Some were obvious right away, some took a bit of magnification and sleuthing. Would have been nice if images were the same resolution. Overall though, my gut was usually correct.

That said, despite my scoring well, it's clear that this will become more and more difficult in the very near future. The quality/accuracy difference between today and a few years back is staggering.

The problem I've seen is that it seems like your average person will fall for even the bad ones if it's something they "want to see." As in, it confirms their political, religious, or any other biases they may have.

Like the other Phil, they just seem too clean, too real.

I have two other fears
1. These games are being used as crowdsourced Turing tests to improve AI
2. While some will fall for the deepfakes, for many others of us it will create doubt about anything we see. We'll be more likely to accept those that align with our priors, and more likely to reject those that don't. Kinda like putting a quote over a picture of Sam Elliot.

I know my suspicion is already high, mainly because I get multiple "immersive phishing training" emails each week. I don't want to get dinged with additional training, so anything sus at all gets the button.

🔥 Perfect Streak: 10

I can spot AI images 95% of the time. 🧠

jinx.
You owe me a coke

One interesting anecdote is yes, you are all getting high scores 75%+ but you're already going into it KNOWING one is AI and I think that point is very important.

EDIT:
Coming back to reiterate my point. I got 80%, but I scored so high because I knew going into it it one was fake and I got to spend time analyzing each photo. If this was some sort of social feed with a split second viewing time and no prompt, I would have honestly thought most were real, and at worst, heavily photoshopped.

an excellent point indeed, sir. Like I said, this is more about "awareness." Way, way too many people are just totally oblivious to how good AI is now.

They say " a picture is worth a 1000 words ". Think I will take a 1000 words ---> I do not know a 1000 expletives...

Well yes. But it's more about learning the skill of spotting them. Sort of like a pilot knowing that crashing in the flight simulator won't actually destroy a plane and kill hundreds. Sure, she might do better because the stress is off, but she's still learning the skills necessary to fly.

Totally get it it. But the reality is such an tiny fraction of the population has any interest in practicing this.

I went through and quickly glanced at each picture with 65% accuracy. I'm going off my phone, and didn't blow the pictures up for detail.

I'm consistently amazed how much time some of you have on your hands. I guess you must still be employed.

And how many are posted on this site.
