Can we have a blue gill thread?

Found this little nuisance along with 15-20 of his friends while looking for spooky carp at a local pond. I did manage to get a single carp refusal, but the had to get back to work.

Didn't put up much of a fight on my short 8/9wt Steffen glass though.

Got back out again this week for more smiles. Found some Yellow Bass as well
Looks like some spunky little guysπŸ‘. I caught a few yesterday myself….they sure can make me laugh. 😎

and never heard of a yellow bass…looks kinda like a crappie with stripes

…. and had to chuckle a little more ….I did a quick search and learned yellow bass are native to the Mississippi. I grew up in NE Iowa and still had never heard of β€˜em πŸ€ͺ

Ah, bluegills! Fly fished for them with a Cajun named Russel Daigle in south Louisiana in the mid 70’s. Throwing popping bugs to β€œbedding” fish behind big cypress trees was a hoot. The tricky part was not disturbing the low hanging wasp nests! My Cajun buddy was a hoot, if we got into really nice β€œbream” (pronounced β€œbrim”) he called them β€œtitty bream” because you had to hold them against your chest to unhook’em.

Then I went to Auburn University to study fisheries and I learned pond dynamics necessary to produce those big β€œtittie bream”! One of my best friends there, a native Alabama boy, Mike, and I would walk to edge of our research ponds throwing poppers in what he called β€œperch jerking”. They aren’t perch of course but Mike liked how it sounded.

The biggest I ever caught were in Toledo Bend lake on the Texas/Louisiana border. We couldn’t find them with flies but we caught bluegills pushing over a half pound using crickets. It’s the only time I caught those fun little battlers big enough to filet.

I haven’t thought about those times in years. My buddies are dead now but the memories are great reruns playing in my mind. Thanks for triggering the reruns!

IMG_5586.jpegIMG_5593.jpegIMG_5601.jpegHad a fun evening chasing these fiesty panfish last evening with a buddy
Wasn’t hot by any means but great way to spend the last hours of the day

Going to try late morning next as I did a driveby at 10:00 and heard a lot of eats

Cheers

Those are some slabs! Been a while since I've chased bluegill and crappie. I think I know what I'm doing this weekend...
Sweet!
You have some good spots up there
Let’s get out together some time

This lake has put out some bigger gills for me in the past, but not today. Still a lot of fun to watch them attack a small gurgler.
There were lots of fish dimpling around the beaver hut. Also caught some micro bass.
Glad I wore my rain jacket. Juneuary felt good. πŸ˜‚

What an awesome looking place to fish. Lily pads a huge beaver dam.
