Camping near Rialto Beach first week in August

Hi Friends, I'm camping with my family during the first week in August on the OP near Rialto Beach and the Quillayute River. It's mostly a family-focused trip; we'll be using our campsite as a base camp to explore the park trails and the beaches. But I might get a little fishing in, fresh or salt. I'm not familiar with the area and would appreciate any ideas about things to do and places to go (where dogs are allowed). I thought I'd bring a beach spinning rod and my 6wt fly rod. Thanks!

It's been a long while since I've been there, but my memory is that there's not much to do out there that isn't nature focused. Kinda middle of nowhere. La Push is pretty small.

But the area is beautiful. A hike to Second Beach is well worth it. I know nothing about fishing the Quillayute other than it sounds like it can be a zoo at some times of the year. Looks like it's open while you are there though.

The quil all the way up to the mouth of the sol duc can be a fun place to fish for cutties. Dicky River and the sol duc will produce some as well. I will PM you.

We had a fun family car camping trip! I ended up fishing muddlers near our camp on the lower Quillayute River for SRC in the 12-14" range, nice bright strong fish.

The biggest joy was discovering that our rescue dog Boudicca is a great hike and fish dog! We have had her 2 years and in that time she has never gone in the water and always seemed afraid of the water. So I never took her fishing. This a trip, she got over her phobia.

Here she is watching me and my son in the cool water:

Stepping carefully:

Looks easier that way...

Uh oh.

She swam back to shore from there.

Nice to spend some time fishing with my son!

We had great grilled chicken in tortillas with cabbage and cheddar.

I saw a nice display of flies at the local burger joint.

And we hiked the Bogachiel River Trail loop and saw a black bear trying to get close to a herd of (Roosevelt?) Elk.

So nice to have some time off from work!

My biggest lesson: I am too old to wade rivers in Chaco sandals. I must bring my felt boots from now on, I went down hard twice and have big bruises to prove it.

I love chacos and wear them all summer. But unless you get the Stealth soles (which may be discontinued) they aren't great for wet rocks. And even the Stealth soles aren't gonna hold a candle to felt.

When Vermont briefly banned felt soles I bought Patagonia River Walkers with the stealth/sticky rubber soles. I fell early and often. Felt and a staff is the way for me. I don't bounce as well as I used to!
