Camping Along the St. Joe

Hello,

I will be driving over to Avery, ID., to fish the St. Joe the week after next. I've only stayed in the Cabins on the St. Joe before, never camped. I'm figuring on finding a centrally located place to camp and make excursions up and down the river over three days. Is there a relatively safe place to camp where I can leave my tent, camping gear, etc., and not worry too much about thieves while I'm away each day to fish? Maybe a state park, or possible close to businesses that might make meth heads think twice about ripping me off? I'll be there Tuesday thru Friday. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Cliff

There’s two campgrounds close to Avery, one with two sites and another with maybe five. Another Campground is up 20 miles or so at Red Ives. There are several pit toilets along the way with clearings where people camp. Didn’t seem like theft was a problem. They prosecute thieves in Idaho.54C10999-5836-4ABF-AFCC-DA80A4660049.jpeg

If memory serves me right, there are a few USFS campgrounds along the river. It’s a pretty place. Enjoy.

Tin Can Flat is another campground, I think some of those campgrounds may have host which makes for a little more security.

Which way in-via St Maries or over Moon Pass?

Turner Flat, Tin Can Flat and Conrad Crossing are FS campgrounds (fee) up the road from Avery. They all seem to get enough Forest Service vehicles driving thru to discourage theft. They charge $15.00/night.

Thanks for the tip. I will probably go in through St. Maries.
