Lots of folks like the Smith sunglasses low-light ChromaPop polarized yellow lenses for dark winter or dawn/dusk PNW fishing. With 33% light transmission, they offer a bit of tint while still cutting down the glare. And the light yellow base color helps with low light contrast. However, at $275 or so (using the classic Guides Choice model as an example), they can be a spicy meatball for some of our wallets. Especially if we're the type who has to consider sunglasses a consumable item because we lose them regularly.

Being one of those kinds of people, I don't own many pairs of expensive sunglasses. Instead, I have gone with those from the Suncloud brand. Suncloud is owned by Smith. I don't know how much of the parent company's knowledge and R&D leaks down to Suncloud, but it feels like a fair bit. I've found them to be optically solid sunglasses for a reasonable price, usually around $60 MSRP. And their customer service is the same high level as you get from Smith themselves (I have had reason to use each over the years).

For the past chunk of years, I've regularly worn a few pairs of Suncloud's Sentry model. A couple of years ago, they came out with a low-light tint light yellow base lens with 30% light transmission. I picked up a couple of pairs and they have become my winter/dawn/dusk sunglasses. I was just wearing them last night as I cast into twilight at a local bluegill pond.

Today I got curious about the light transmission numbers and while searching, happened to notice that the low-light version seems to be on closeout sale for $32. That link is to Amazon, but I also see them at REI, Backcountry, and a few others at similar prices. The "last chance" labeling on some of these pages makes me worry they are going to be discontinued, so I'm going to pick up another pair just in case. I would encourage anyone looking for a cheap low-light pair of sunglasses to grab them before they are gone.

I had intended to write a bit of a review comparing the Smith and Suncloud versions of low light lenses. But I guess this post will be as close as I get if they are actually getting discontinued. Perhaps that 30% low light lens will live on in future Suncloud models. But I'm not very confident about that, the highest light transmission lens they currently seem to have in other models is 25%.

Good to know. I was at local Costco today to pick up a boat box that Paul_ linked on the Lakes thread and noticed they have Smith sunglasses for $59. They weren’t 580 lenses but still…..
I’ve seen Maui Jim glasses at Costco for under $100. I got Costa Fisch with bronze 580P lenses for under $100 a couple years ago.

Just bought some Smiths with the Chroma Pop lenses on sale for about $150. Love the lenses, but I don't think they're sufficiently better than the Sunclouds I have used in the past to fully justify the cost. Plus, that's a cool-looking frame on those Sunclouds that should all but eliminate glare. Maybe after I lose my Smiths LOL....

Man I miss Chromapop. Once my Rx changed, I had to move on since Smith's prescription lab won't touch prisms (what my Rx uses).

I wore a few of their low light ones out over the years. Haven't found a suitable replacement yet ☹️

And to be clear, these Suncloud lenses aren't as nice as ChromaPop. But for the price, they are very solid.

First impressions are not good. Not designed for a big head for sure but that may or may not apply to others. The frame is so cheap and flimsy, I have saftey glasses at work that are nicer. They also did not come with a case.
FWIW, these fit my (7 1/4 hat) head perfectly. That said, to each their own! Nothing is going to fit everyone. Humans are lumpy monkeys with vastly differing body shapes. I should have mentioned that they are listed as "medium" fit. So anyone with a big noggin should probably be cautious.

As to the quality, I think it's going to be more about what you are used to. Unless the quality has changed since I bought my last pair, every pair of Sunclouds I have used have been better than any other budget sunglasses I've tried and every pair I've not lost has lasted for years. But comparing them to brands with list (or sale) prices 5x higher isn't really fair. The Smiths and Maui Jims had BETTER be much nicer for the difference in price, right? Otherwise, what are we paying for?

Now, it's also totally understandable for $160 sale Smiths to be a better value for a particular person's wallet and life than a pair of $30 sale Sunclouds. And those low light lens Reddings you linked to are a good option if one has that money to spend (or is better about not losing sunglasses than I am). That said, they are also medium fit, so the same caveat may apply for XL head folks.

All in all, I'm sorry that a suggestion of mine didn't work out. But I guess that's one of the nice things about shopping for wearables on Amazon, easy to return something if it doesn't fit.

Well I guess the 32 dollar sunglasses ( which I have 2 pair of) are not as good as the 160 dollar sunglasses is the upshot.
This is unsurprising to me.
However, the crush resistance is about the same,.
😆

I am officially wrong about what I said towards these sunglasses. Girlfriend told me so and claimed them as her own.
😂
I legit laughed at this.

Been there, friend. I been there.

I lost my old faithful Native Big Forks (with the low-light lenses in them) overboard last week so just checked on these. They were sold out yesterday, but just scored a pair now. Amazon has 6 pairs left!

How are these a budget version of chromapop lowlight lenses... The description to me is they are just a regular pair of polarized lenses...

For good mid-price glasses, Hobie. Bargains galore if you search hard..

In that they are both from the same parent company and have similar VLT numbers. Obviously they aren't actually chromapop lenses. But finding decent polarized sunglasses with low-light VLT numbers isn't common.

If folks have money for Smith, they should absolutely pay for Smith. They make great sunglasses. But I lose sunglasses too often to shell out that much for them. So I stick with brands like Suncloud.

I bought a pair of Hobie (non-scrip, polarized, mirror lenses) from Costco ($50-ish), they're really nice shades but minus the bifocal that I prefer in sunglasses. I recently bought a pair of "ShadyRays" prescription sunglasses. I seem to lose track of how inflation works as I thought they were costly (not cheap, not expensive). So far I like them but the downside is they don't have wrap around frames like the original photo @Josh posted. I guess sunglasses are like boats; no one perfect pair.

Dan - "bargains galore".......... ?

Nice and "cold" this morning at Ocean Shores. What a change from all the smoke and heat back home.

Head/eye/face shapes are so different, I'm more than a little surprised that any of us can ever agree on what a "good" pair of sunglasses is.

In all honesty, I don't think these Sentry glasses are particularly good looking. But they are extremely comfortable for my head/face, don't interfere with my hat, and block a decent amount of side angle light without looking like I'm wearing Pit Vipers. That's why I own multiple pairs.

Many of their models list for over $100 but can be found online for much less.
