Bristol Bay

Another trip in the books. I don't know how it happened... In an area that had not had a day of sunshine before the trip, we had 5 straight days. A rarity. The water warmed up a bit near the end of that and the trout bite turned on. Had fun floating, camping, fishing and just generally having a relaxing great time with no cell phone! Love the rivers of Bristol Bay.

If you are headed that way the water is cold and high. We moved very fast up high. No dragging at all. Caught fish the entire trip - but caught ridiculous fish when the water warmed a bit. We had no issue finding safe camping; but the water wasn't coming up at all. If it was at the volume it was already at, that could be a bit hairy. Smaller tribs may be different.

I went to Homer earlier this summer and did well with Halibut, but I really need to plan an August fly fishing trip. Was all of this organized on public land?

No. Combo of National Park and local land. River to high water is fair game. I still give the locals a heads up that I am going to be there. Most rivers in that area are like that, unless you are going on an interior creek that is entirely in park land.
