Bristol Bay

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has been up to Bristol Bay recently. Is the weather, specifically the rain been as bad as what has been reported? I am just wondering what I am getting myself into. Thanks

Recently, like the last 10 years or the last two weeks? They do a pretty good job on weather prediction in the Bay, given the commercial fisheries taking place there.

Any time you’re in the Alaskan bush, you need good rain gear. If you’re wading, your bottom half is covered. Simms wading jackets have served me well through out Alaska- Southeast, Western and the arctic.

Don’t worry about the rain. Good luck on your trip.

I just got back today from a 10 day trip there. It rained a good amount, especially the three days we camped but overall the weather seemed somewhat similar to other trips the last 5-6 years. Lots of clouds, fog, some sunshine, temps all over and maybe a tad bit more hard rain than previous trips.

All that said, who knows what next week holds. Like anytime you head up there, prepare for everything. We had days where I could have fished comfortably in a t-shirt if not for the bugs and days 5 layers including a winter puffy and a raincoat could not keep you warm. It was an amazing trip though. I’ll probably post a report in the next couple days. One of these trips, I might just stay forever ;).

Edit: re: weather forecasts. They were hit or miss when I was there. My guess is they were always accurate somewhere in the region though! Seemed like in many cases, the weather was dependent on the drainage you were fishing. Sunny one area and the lake/valley just over the ridge socked in with fog and drizzle. I believe that is fairly typical in that area. Maybe someone who lives in the area can provide more detail.

Where are you headed? I am going up next week. Rivers are on the high side in the Kuskowin delta, so that may be an issue on some smaller tribs (as far as camping and fast water with sweepers, etc). I just want it to be consistent so I don't have to run for it in the middle of the night. Wet weather is obviously expected. Read the fishing reports from the Kanektok on the Duncan site. It's been a cold summer. If you look at water level data that is available, this year is at the top of the range. I'm hoping it comes down a bit still. I'm glad I'm on the Kanektok this year and not some smaller trib. Kanektok has plenty of high water camping.

Lotta good info at that link. It covers the whole region, but you can get subarea and point forcasts by clicking on the map. Past and historic weather/climate data is also available at that link, as well as the forecasters discussion of the current 7-day fcst.
My advice is bring a good rainjacket.
