The Core
It's the core of the fly line that determines its tensile strength, as well as how much it stretches. It also helps determine how stiff the line will be.
Strength -- all line cores are built to be much stronger than the heaviest leader tippets that are likely to be used with them.
For example: a 2 or 3 weight line will normally break at about 20 lbs.; standard 4 to 8 weight line are around 30-pound test, a heavy saltwater line core may test over 75 lbs.

I know when you snag a brand new Rio Outbound WF8I on the lava in Hawaii, you have to take several wraps around your forearm, turn your back to the ocean and take at least five steps towards towards the condo to get it to break off. 
Turned an 8 weight Outbound Short into a 6 weight Outbound Super Short, which didn't cast for $hit after that. Even on a 6wt rod.
