Bitter sweet

Bob Rankin

Wandering the country with rifle and spey rod.
Well it’s been one hell of a week. I started hurting for mule deer on Monday and hunted Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and today. I had been on a nice buck for three days with no ethical shot.

Today I tried a new spot. It finally happened. I hiked 43 miles in 5 days. I’m felling pretty blessed. Maximum effort! He wasn’t the buck a was after, but he’s a pretty cool buck to end the season.

Congrats Bob!

THAT’s a true hunting report! Well done! From the photos it’s clear you weren’t strolling along a cut wheat field! The hunt is the story!
Thank you for the kind words sir. I was hunting open sage country, probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Being able to spot them and keep the wind in my favor was challenging, along with knowing when to stay put and keep moving.

It kicked my ass but I wouldn’t have changed a thing!

well done! Curious what rifle you were using for long distance shots in open terrain....270 , 7mm or similar?

I’m using a 6.5 PRC. It was only 160 yard shot at most 😂. Dropped right in his tracks with a hand loaded Berger 156grn EOL.
