Best Fly Threader And Knot Tying Tool For Visually Impaired?

Old406Kid

Legend
As I have aged, 76+ now, tippet has more or less become invisible unless I have the perfect background.
What used to take 15 seconds can easily turn into minutes of frustration.
That said, my problems are minor in comparison to a long time fishing buddy who has wet eye macular degeneration.
@krusty recently gave him an Angler's Image tool tool that looked like it would help but he struggled with it and I ended up tying his knots for him.

In searching, I saw this one and wonder if anyone has any experience with it?

Any and all suggestions appreciated as he's about readsy to throw in the towel out of frustration.

I ordered one of these to be delivered tomorrow and will follow up with a review once I figure out how to use it.

I bought that second one and it's coming in the mail now. I'm not visually impaired but damn do my hands shake all over the place.

One of the guys I fish with has some hand tremor problems and uses this threader. It works for him. He can see fine, but the threader holds flies in a manner which he can guide the tippet into the hole without too much trouble

That's the one I just ordered... hoping it works out.

Been tempted to buy one , anxious to see how it works out for you . The demonstration makes it look effortless .

I saw an instagram for these, they were offering 2 for like $70. caveat emptor.

I have worn glasses for 50 years, and progressive trifocals tweaked for very close - fine work to deal with presbyopia almost the last 30 years of that.
I am trying "new eyes", or rather "multifocal interocular lenses" with cataract surgery in both eyes. After the first better, and dominant eye was done I had 20/20 vision within 1 day in that eye.
Even though the non-operated eye is hopelessly blurry by itself I could thread a * #14 * beadhead fly without glasses or magnification after 4 days but it wasn't easy. At one week I could see 20/20 at distance and can see this small phone screen clearly without magnification using both eyes. The 2nd eye gets done next week.

Maybe, just maybe...

Having had cataract surgery on both eyes , my vision was not bad before the surgery ,and is about 20/20 now , but the close-up work has not improved nor would it unless I had chose a different surgery ,but I just chose the regular lens. So I use cheaters to read or whatever . When fishing I have regular sunglasses with bifocals that work okay . But as I age ,now at 78 nothing is getting easier .

Things will improve, talk over ideas with your attending after #2 is cleared.

Thanks, I was already farsighted with minimal distance correction. I am already seeing better at intermediate and near distance than before the surgery with just one eye done. The surgeon told me that both eyes working together with clear multifocal IOLs will give me much better vision than each corrected eye individually. But if I can't see well enough to tie, and tie on flies without corrective lenses, I would rather wear glasses full time even if I'm 20/20 at far, intermediate, and reading distances with an "eagle eye" distance and "macro" near progressive prescription than need to occasionally use and hunt for - hassle with carrying readers.
First world problem...:sneaky:

But might just be totally spectacles-free... 🙏

A bit of drift; humanity has been doing cataract surgery for centuries. Over 2500 years in fact, starting in 🇮🇳 India and 🇪🇬 Egypt. Since both have a large fishing culture, I'd like to think they've solved the hook threading issue, too.

I ordered one of the Fly Roost Magnetic Fly Threader back on March 29th and still do not have the item. I have checked the tracking and the item has been stuck in Miami Florida since April 25. Also when I ordered there was also a 40% tax added.
