A close encounter with a rare fish in Alert Bay

A whale scientist was surprised this week when a giant tropical fish showed up just a few metres from his waterfront home in Alert Bay.

During the summer of 2021 I was on a research project in AK and we saw a North Pacific Right Whale off Kodiak that he had seen a few months earlier off Haida Gwaii.

Scientists spot rare, mysterious right whales in waters off Alaska

The North Pacific right whale was nearly hunted to extinction, and the population off Alaska has never recovered, numbering some 30 whales today. But two sightings this summer were a hopeful sign that more of the whales could be undiscovered.
