Baseball 2025

IMO, Managers rarely matter. They only really matter in the post season.
I have wondered about that same thing with baseball. There are fewer “levers to pull” in baseball than there are other sports. You see HC’s make big impacts on outcomes in football and basketball games simply based on in-game decisions. I don’t know anything about hockey or soccer so I can’t speak to that.

It’s hard to quantify what good leadership is worth in terms of wins/losses.

I have a couple buddies who played professional baseball. I have never asked them about this but I’m going to now. One of them had a long career in the Majors and the other bounced around the minors for a few years.

Josh Naylor has been disappointing in this series so far. Pretty sure he's completely 0-fer at the plate, with a number of 1pitch outs. That error yesterday was a gut-punch. Maybe his new soon to be born child is on his mind? If he and or a few other folks towards the bottom of the line-up (looking at your Genio...) just start seeing the ball the M's offense will be just fine.

I'd love to hear their thoughts.

I once had a discussion with an British mother who asked about why her kids american football coach acted as overbearing and aggressive as he did and I replied that football is a "heavily coached" game. I think it may be the mst heavily coached of all major sports. I would say that baseball may be the least coached. In recent years it has become more heavily coached with defensive positioning, advanced analyitics etc. and but it's tough to actually see and even tougher to quantify. At it's heart baseball is mostly a one on one sport with the pitch facing the batter. A great catcher can certainly be a huge partner for the pitcher but in it's essence the game is pitcher vs. hitter.

Leadership is always important. Leadership does not need to come from the coach/ manager though. It's hard to win in team sports without good leadership. I think that may be even more true in baseball over 162 games. Again, it's hard to actually quantify. In baseball the whole can be greater than the sum of it's parts when there is great leadership.

I remember a quote that I heard about a basketball team where it was said that your Leader does not have to be your best player but your best player has to be a leader. I think that hold true in most team sports and basketball in particular given that there are only 5 players and 1 ball. Similarly, I have heard Isaiah Thomas quoted as saying that the key to basketball was "having 5 players pulling in the same direction." Isaiah always got his team to do that.

some may have already commented - but the announcers TALK waaaaaaaay too much ! geez, they wont shut up, and since they must think they have to speak, they bring up some inane points. some of their insights are interesting, but many could be.... not mentioned.

College football on HULU had a view where is was just the players and the crowd noise. Not sure if they have that this year. Some sports on TV should definitely have that option. Nothing worse than hear the announcers jabber just for the sake of hearin their hound dog heads rattle.

Baseball managers clearly have significant impact on games. Changing pitchers, creating the lineup and rotation, green-liighting a batter in a 3-0 count, putting the hit-n-run on, shifting fielders, etc; these are all significant decisions. The challenge is that until we find the do-over button for space/time and we're able to share data between 2 different reference frames in it we don't have a way to know objectively if a given decision was 'good' or 'bad'.

Mariners are doing great this game. GREAT!

Go Mariners!

Nice win for the M's. Great to see Genio and JP join the party. Logan Gilbert was surgical. I could do w/o seeing Furgeson pitch again. Here's hoping Bryce Miller brings his best stuff tomorrow and a shame that Woo isn't available to end this series.

Great.
