Took my 9'6" Granger Victory to a fall cutthroat river today. The Granger throws a really long line with very few false casts. It's 6.2 ounces so I can fish it all day without getting tired and it has the backbone to handle the occasional steelhead which this river provides in the fall. A slim size 8 Brads Brat looked nice amidst the orange and red leaves and turned a couple cutts.

Things didn't pick up until I put on a size 10 Dark Mackerel on a standard wet fly hook. It's a scottish sea trout fly which works well for cutts.

The Dark Mackerel has an orange GP tippet tail, a red tinsel body wound with claret hackle and ribbed with oval silver tinsel and a bronze mallard rolled wing. A dark fly but with some sparkle. Several anglers had already been though the run so maybe a size 10 fly was a little more subtle.

Grilled trout tonight. A fine end to a fall day.
