Bahamas - Abaco/Elbow Cay

Bonefish Jack

Steelhead
Beginning to think about a trip to the Bahamas next December. We are looking at renting a house on Elbow Cay.

I have fished a number of islands in the Bahamas, and have never been to Abaco or Elbow Cay. Looking for any tips, advice, and guidance (fishing or otherwise) on this location. Feel free to pm, as well.

Years ago, we did a VRBO on Lubber's Quarters Cay that included a boat.
Great DIY wadable bonefish flats on the east side of Abaco. Tide dependant.
Good barracuda sight fishing on the sea of Abaco.
Great fishing for a variety of fish in tidal cuts. I caught the first permit I ever casted to in one of these.
Good opportunities for dolphin off the windward side of Elbow Cay.
Shark fishing at night is a blast.
Awesome snorkeling, and if you can free-dive to 30+ feet, all the conch you want.
Note, all of this was prior to the hurricane.
Gear:
8-weight, for bones
10-weight for barracudas and fishing tidal cuts.
Heavy duty saltwater spinning rod for dolphin and sharks.
A great place to hang out with rods strung, mask and fins aboard, and no specific agenda. Have fun! I'm envious.

I took a couple trips to Grand Bahama Island, not for fishing reasons, but I did get some fishing in.
I spent the big bucks for a guided day bone fishing and had a great time, beautiful water, lots of fish life, even caught a few bone fish.
The best times fishing were the DIY trips along the canals and beaches.
Bar jacks, yellow tail jacks, yellow tail snapper, cuda, fish on, not for long unless you use spider wire for tippet, and don't forget the sharks.
The little sharks are a pain in the ass when wade fishing.
I learned real quick to back my ass up on the the beach.
Have fun, I know I did.

My buddies and I used to do an annual trip to the Abacos. We would go in May. Was last there in 2006 or 2007 so it’s been a while and I’m not sure how the rebuilding is going after Dorian. We stayed on Lubber’s one year and then switched to Elbow (more for the WAGS to do). Would highly recommend hiring a guide for a trip or two in the famous Marls of Abaco. Guides can meet you in Marsh Harbour. There’s a semi regular ("soon come, mon”) ferry that runs from Hopetown. Would also highly recommend renting a boat. Having a boat opens the door to a lot of DIY options – access to Great Abaco east side flats like Cormorant Cay and Bight of Old Robinson, blue water for Mahi Mahi, and beautiful secluded beaches for picnics, swimming, snorkeling, etc… We would usually rent an Albury Brothers 23 CC from Island Marine. If you’re comfortable handling a boat it’s a real game changer for getting around and exploring. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with doing a couple guided trips in the Marls and chillin’ on Elbow the rest of the time. One of the most beautiful beaches is at the southern tip of Elbow – Tahiti Beach. You can fish there, too!
