Flash back to 9/30/24, when I fractured my hip and femur. Doc said six months to a year of recovery. Actually, it ended up being a little over a year.

I saw the thread “First fish of 2025” and had nothing from me. But yesterday’s forecast looked good, so I went to my favorite put-and-take lake, the same place the accident happened.

I charged the waterproof camera and was good to go. Put the toon in the water, rowed out, and started catching fish right from the get-go. Nearly every cast produced a strike. When the third or fourth fish in the net was a
beautiful, brightly colored brookie, I realized I had forgotten the camera.

So you’ll just have to believe me.

I don’t usually count my catch, steelhead excepted, but this was a special time for me. I netted 15 on a streamer and one on a dry.

At the end of a couple hours rowing and kicking in the breeze, I was pooped but happy. Kind of paying for it today, but as far as I’m concerned it’s just one step in getting back in shape.

Except for my memory when it comes to remembering the camera.

Still though, stiff and sore but happy.

Speaking of arthritis, it's getting bad enough that the tips of my thumb and index finger are numb which led to some interesting times on my next trip to a small lake in Oregon. Was catching fish and at one point realized I needed to add a length of tippet. Tying a triple surgeons loop with numb fingers was damn difficult even though not much wind was blowing. I had to thread the short end first and then put the long end through the loop tip first and pull it through. Did it three times that way but got it done. Then realized I was going to have to tie the fly with an clinch knot instead of a Duncan loop. Next time I'll start with a longer tippet. But the day was great and landed a few fish and enjoyed another day, Let's see if I can add a photo.
