Awesome Dogs of PNW

Bird dogs -- True Partners . . . they always forgive our mistakes and rarely if ever make any on their own (although when deserved, they can give "The Look" following too-frequent misses.).

Over a year ago, we had to finally put our beloved dog, Mia, down. The bladder cancer finally got her but we did battle it off for 13 months.

After a fashion, we decided our home was too quiet without a dog so we looked and looked for an adult dog that fit our requirements. We couldn't find what we wanted. We were visiting a shelter and my wife shocked the devil out of me. She spotted a kennel with a number of puppies. Then and there, she decided she would go with a puppy instead of an adult.

I asked her if she was sure because the puppies days of a dog are hell. The last time we had a puppy was with our first dog, Sage, and that was many decades ago. We were much younger then and could handle a puppy.

She was sure so we ended up with what was indicated as a Chihuahua mix .... considering the puppy was 8 lbs there was no way in hell she was a Chihuahua mix. Eventually we did find out what she is and Chihuahua is not included.

We named her Maddy because she came from Madras.

This was her when we first brought her home and she really isn't all that much larger now...

Life with a puppy has been a challenge to say the least but after a year, she's starting to act like a normal dog. Our first dog was a Border Collie Shepard mix and our last dog was a Aussy mix so we are accustomed to very intelligent, work dedicated dogs. Maddy is not a herding dog... in fact... when my wife, Virginia, was on a walk with Maddy, a gentleman with his own dog asked Virginia if she knew what bred of dog Maddy is. She said no and the gentleman told her Maddy is a recent Oregon breed called a Decker Hunting Terrier. The breeder was attempting to create a little larger hunter than a rat terrier and was successful. It was a few years ago that the breed was made official.....

I had never heard of a Decker Hunting Terrier before but we now have one. She can be very stubborn but I think she'll grow out of that ... I hope.

RIP Boudicca. She was a really fantastic rescue dog. Bone cancer. We were keeping her going with painkillers and antiinflammatories, but yesterday it became clear that the painkillers could not keep up with the cancer. We put her down this afternoon.

She was well loved and is sorely missed.

I extend my sincere condolences, Zak. Bidding farewell to a loved canine companion is a unique kind of hurt. On the plus side, they love ever and unconditionally, . . . and always . . . without limit. "More than missing her, be thankful for having known her." JF 12/07/1971
