Area 9

I haven't gotten the boat out for the year yet. I plan on going this week but for three days it hardly seems worth it.
If I remember right you’ve had some shitty encounters recently with low situational awareness trollers running up on you because they don’t understand that you’re mooching. I’m sure that doesn’t add to the stoke.

Tides should be good. If you aren’t trying to pull out around 1:00!

3 days of MA9 salmon fishing is a joke. It ignores the hatchery coho salmon fishery and hyper focuses on chinook salmon impact equations.
I mean isn't that best practice? Base the fishing season impacts around the most limited stock. For 9 that would be snohomish and stilliguamish chinook.

It should be good this summer with a forecast of nearly 900k coho. I just hope they come closer to shore this year. They didn’t for the most part last year, at least where I was fishing. Good luck out there.

Up until 2024, you could always fish coho and pinks in July on non chinook days. The result is we went from 19 days of July fishing in 2023 down to 3-4 in 2024 and 2025.
We were always able to fish those non chinook days for years. What used to be a year round season is now two months and three days. We’ve lost October in MA 9 and now most all of July. So having only three days in July sucks.
Look for a post from me later this week on this.

Will be spinning headless herring with a buddy on the 16th. Not sure it is a given that the Chinook season will be even 3 days long!

With the reduced quota and the fact that MA 10 will be closed to Chinook until the 23rd would expect to see an increase in effort in MA 9. Last year on the opener WDFW checked 359 boats that fished MA 9 and 176 that fished MA 10. Potentially might see 30% increase in MA 9.
