Anyone else talk to their fish?

While the fish is in my landing net removing the hook, I will say hold on. If I have to jiggle the fly to unhook several seconds longer, I tell the fish sorry. I then lower my net in the water and sometimes say thank you.

Interesting topic!
Absolutely talk to them!! Thank them for playing - I also talk to the stream. There is a favorite spot on a local stream (Tilly's meadow, well, now Tilly's and Cody's meadow) that I visit after the stream has closed - thank it for the enjoyment it provided me through the summer and bid adieu until next spring - I am sure I have heard it answer me in the breeze - am I crazy? If yes, well, I like it.

cheers

I did notice I was talking to the fish, wishing them well on on their way and thanking them, then I lost a really big one right at the net and it was U.G.D.M-F**@$$#.....:)
Yeah, I might be upset at myself, slip up and say a few words, but not directed at the fish.

I am always relieved when a fish throws a hook close to the boat, and frequently give it slack to do so...seems to often work with flies I tie on Firehole hooks, which are extremely sharp but very smooth.

I usually try to dump 'em, although I make one sit for a pic with each successful fly, or maybe something else. I think I have noticed with the fulling mills barbless jig hooks fish are easier to "loose" than with the hanak ones. I did want that one to smoke for my wife though.

Heh, uhhhh, yeah....🤭

Usually at hook up I let out a long Yeaaahhh Baby! (think, Mr. Incredible style) which is usually followed by coaching the fish to get to me faster... i get strange looks sometimes , like i swore loudly in church or somethimg. 😇

When my kids were younger and were interested in fishing I would take them out. They enjoyed the tug and then gave me the rod to bring them in. They would always talk to the fish just before I released them.

Not sure if you could describe it quite as talking...during long battles with big King's when swinging in tidewater, the kind that have you chasing the fish with the skiff as the backing screams out, have not only used every swear word possible made some up as well...

When things are a bit slow I've been known to do a little "Fishy, fishy in the brook come and bite upon my hook.":giggle:
On one trip with my young grandson it worked like magic. He's 20 now and we still laughingly use it.
Here's living proof.:ROFLMAO:

I Always talk to fish and they talk back, most times they say no.

Doesn't everybody say, "here fishy fishy fishy,... I don't want to hurt you,..." while fishing?

“Thanks, go get bigger”
This reminds me of a piece of skinny water that I fished three years in a row. I parked and out of my car on the side of the road. A short jaunt to the water. I dropped my fly into this small hold and caught a 6" RB. I released it back into the water and moved someplace else for the day. I stopped there two more time over the years. Each time I dropped my fly into the hole in the rocks I caught a bigger fish. This is not a fish story. It really happened.

"Hey little fishy, want a piece of candy?"

Is that bad?

Way back in my salmon gill-netting days, we had a rule that you had to kiss the first fish. This was fine, until one night, the first fish over the roller was a rat fish. "Uh, that's a no from me, dog".
