Anti Reverse Fly Reels

Opinions? Are these a gimmick? I fish for redfish, and have busted a couple knuckles when fighting in skinny water. I like the idea in theory, but am concerned with the extra moving parts involved compared to a standard direct drive reel. The reel will only see saltwater, and I ain't that diligent with my reel maintenance as it is. Anyone have experience with an anti reverse fly reel?

While I have no first hand experience with anti reverse fly reels I was talking to a guy that does a lot of blue water fly fishing and he told me he would not own one, because it takes almost a full turn of the handle before it re engages. So having never fished for reds if they do happen to be a fish that runs at you this could give him the slack line he needs to spit the hook.

Interesting, never considered that mechanical aspect. Thanks!

This Billy Pate is designed as and anti reverse reel, they also make a tarpon reel with the same anti-reverse capabilities. I don't have one but got to use a clients one time. It was pretty heavy, I do have a tibor everglades. The drag knob is in front of the handle and that made it difficult to adjust. The woman who owned it didn't want to get her knuckles busted up. Personally I like to palm the reel. For bonefish I keep the drag backed off a little and let the fish run and then palm as needed and increase the drag after the 2nd run. For red fish I don't think you need anti-reverse.
