Another fly fishing site sold out.....

They don't seem all that concerned over there. I'll give it a go either way.

I'm still curious about the business side of owning fly fishing forums. Let's face it, forums in general aren't that attractive to the younger generations and fly fishing is a predominantly male driven sport. Just seems odd that this is where you'd invest your dollar. Am I missing it?

That forum was already ruined by excessive ads, anyway. It was basically unusable, for me. No great loss.

Yep, nice reminder how great it is to click on a forum and not be shot blasted by ads.

WFF.com was started by Chris for a variety of reasons, but making money through it wasn't the reason. I would think the same with PNW FF as well.

As far as inclucing other regions in the country, I agree in general that I don't care about how things are fishing right out of the areas that I plan to fish soon.

However I do like including like minded FF crazy people from all around the US and world. It's always fun to read reports of others, no matter where they are or what they're fishing for!

Also for conservation efforts, its really good to get others all around the US involved in our local, county, state issues. Things like opening the Skagit (Occupy Skagit), saving wild fish and even issues like NO Pebble Mine are best served by having contact with people all around the world.

Protecting fish and the rivers and wild areas like the OP are critical and having a place to address issues that people will donate their time and money is fantastic for our area! I have to remind myself sometimes how lucky we are to live here. Many plan trips of a lifetime out here to WA and MT because of how good it is, despite the numbers of fish and chances of hooking up on that unicorn fish!

On a completlely different track, one of the reasons I took the time to post my recent report on the Yak, despite not catching any fish, was because of some of your reports Swimmy! But mainly becuase I had so much fun and needed to get away for a bit!

Cheers!
Bill

I don't doubt this at all. I was thinking more from VSA's perspective.

VSA just wants access to the users to advertise to them and make more $$ through click throughs. The newspaper model, on the interwebz.. a larger audience means they can charge more to advertizers! That's why they're buying up sites like crazy.

For the site owners, like Chris, or anyone who owns a site, they get an out and a way to make of $$ for all of the hard work they've done. For VSA its all about increasing the user base and collecting info (demgraphics, data analytics) and being able to monetize forums, fly fishing, cars, biking, mountain climbing or underwater basket weaving forums. Data collection is key! Look how Amazon's algorythm's predict what else you might want to buy based on what you have in your cart, what you buy (your orders) and what that means for them beyond the actual purchase. And as soon as you buy that widget, or guns and butter, then it shows up in your FB feed and on your FF web site!

This info also applies to or can political campaigns and forcasting buying trends. Just the classified on our fishing sites can tell you what works and does for gear, in most cases!!

This is why I choose to "support" this site and did for WFF.com until the change. I could just use an ad blocker, but in the case of sites I love, that just prevents them from revenue when they're small and upcoming and just trying to maintain the site without losing money, not makeing money!!

So many people complain about ads... seriously guys, it's like two clicks to not see ads anymore.

I can tell you from experience that there isn't much money to be made running a forum ;)

Unless.... you exploit user data and force feed ads. Then you make bank. I've chosen the less viable path to business success..

Can you recommend a good freebie for an ipad?

If you're using a regular web browser I don't see why it wouldn't work. I'm otherwise iPad ignorant. I don't do anything with iOS.

I prefer keeping PNWFF separate as well as independent. If people from other taken over forums end up joining here, that's fine. But I think it would be unwise to try and fold other off shoot forums into this. Maybe have links to other independent forums so people can be referred to other places in this country or others. If PNWFF grew really large, then it would need a business plan different from member support via small donations. I don't want to see PNWFF become exactly what Evan, Josh, and Billy have sought to avoid.

Actually.... If this site is an s-corp or LLC you could write off pretty much everything related to fishing as R&D. New rod? Make a post about it and a review, some other new gadget, same. Problem is gas, you either have to have a dedicated commercial vehicle you use only for fishing related trips and have it on a depreciation schedule and pay property taxes on it, then you can write off gas. Or write off milage. I always write off milage, it's I think .53cents a mile right now. Almost every trip I make I can figure out a way to make it business related, I usually keep a log and drive by the competition to see how busy they are then log it. There can be perks to running a business even if it doesn't 'make a lot of money'

I'm feeling a lot of love in the room tonight.

It would be interesting to know how many ' Outsiders " like me who are registered here, are also long-time members of NAFFF, WA, etc.

I recognize some here and know there must be more that are using a different handle on each site. It might demonstrate that this board already has more of a national flavor than your tastebuds are picking up on.

Wooooooah. That's a big one.

I own some domains that could be a good substitute ;) anyone active there that could start a PM chain if I maybe build up a new place for them?
It might be a good idea. but don't spread yourself to thin.
