Alaska in June

Life of the Party
Going to Alaska for my 40th and looking for recommendations. Ideally would be a mid June trip. Again ideally, would also want to chase steelhead but kings, bulls, cutties, coho, sockeye would be fine.

Where have you gone and what would you recommend?

Depends where you want to go. The Bristol Bay, Illiamna area can be very good if you’re able to afford it. June is early for the Kenai peninsula streams, the K opens around the 11th and salmon and Dollies haven’t shown up in numbers. Parks highway around Talkeetna can have some nice fishing. Don’t forget the lakes, can be very good. Late July and August is usually better on the Kenai, albeit more crowded. When I lived there my favorite fishing was after Labor Day when tourists were gone and Alaskans go moose hunting. From then until freeze up fish are fat and prime. Forget steelhead in Alaska, unless you’re able to spend big $$$ on a very few places you’d be better off chasing Steelhead elsewhere.

I was in SE AK early June last year, and nothing much was running in the streams north of Sitka. July and especially August are said to be much better. The locals refer to August as the Month of Plenty...plenty of fish, bugs and bears.

You're in for a real treat if you have an opportunity to become acquainted with White Socks and Devil's Club!

I'd advise contacting the very helpful folks at Alaska Flyfishing Goods for specific advice if you're intending to fish streams in that area.

We did a year fish for salmon and halibut with beach fishing for cutties and Dollie’s in June. Flew into Gustavus via Juneau. It was really fun.

Kanektok for kings is pretty hard to beat. There are also big rainbows, dollies, grayling, and maybe some chrome chums available, but once you hook a big king on a swung fly, it's pretty hard not to keep fishing for them.

Kanektok the last week of June into the first few days of July for me.
Did that trip for a few years straight and had a blast. Kings, Chum, Sockeye and Rainbows was a typical trip for us.

The Sockeye show up and fill a fish box quickly.

Depends on where you want to go. In Bristol Bay during June, you can catch rainbows, dollies, kings (a bit on the early side depending on what system you fish), and sockeye (also a bit on the early side depending on what system you fish). Typically the crowds are much less as the bulk of the salmon haven't shown up yet. But as mentioned in a previous reply, I've had outstanding dryfly fishing for big rainbows at the end of June.

I worked on the Alagnak for 8 summers and we'd typically set up camp late June which coincided nicely to catch early Kings. Shoot me a PM if you have further questions.

Hopefully, the King numbers have bounced back on the Kanektok. I was there in June of 2023 and there were disturbingly very few kings in the water. Hoping that was the exception and not the new trend....

Not many steelhead around in June, that's (late) kelt time on most systems with spring runs. The steelhead window is April-mid-May.
Chinook have been in an extended period of low productivity for AK systems. Most places have limited fishing opportunities for em, and I don't expect that to change for 2025.
As others have pointed out, if you have flexibility in your date range you want to be here in July to early August for species richness/abundance.
And 2nd-ing Krusty's rec of calling Brad and Co. at Alaska flyfishing goods. Best shop in the state, with Mossy's in ANC running a close second.
