Airflo 40+

Is there an equivalent airflo 40+ line to the ones peope liked for beach src fishing in the new airflo line up?

The 40+ had what they called a "delta taper" which is a long continuous taper. Looking at the new lines the only one I see now is the
Sixth Sence. All the new lines are short shooting heads. Wulff Triangle Taper lines have that delta type taper and are sweet lines.

I was under the impression that the 40+ i'm refering to was a short shooting taper not their delta taper like the sixth sense lines.
Also the delta tapers were not long continues tapers. At least the ones Im familiar with.

Here's their old line to compare with the new shooting head style.

What you are showing is a short shooting head that is not a continuous taper or a delta taper. Or at least I would consider a 30-35' head as a shooting head. I guess there are shorter?

This is their old 40+ so you can compare it to the new lines, as you asked in your opening comment...

I don't see anything like the 40+ in their current lineup. Which is a shame because the 40+ were my favorite beach lines by far.

The sniper is the only thing they've got like the 40+ now (integrated shooting head). It unfortunately is only available in 8-10wt.

You may be able to find some "beach" and "surf" lines on closeout if you look around the internet.

Have your shop call Airflo / Mayfly and see if they can order it since it is on their global site.
I bet they can.

Have you thought about a Rio Outbound Short? Made down to a 5 weight and has a thirty foot head. Casts nicely even in the wind. Orvis also makes a line called a Bank Shot. I've bought one in an 8 but haven't tried it yet. Also has a thirty foot head.

OBS has had rather infamous durability issues, leading many of us to switch over to the 40+ line. I hear some buzz about OBS durability improving but don’t care to throw any additional business at that line of lines to find out.

I had cracks after one season of hard fishing with my first Rio Outbound Short. The one I now have has done four seasons without a crack or failed loop. I'm sure there's a bad apple in every bunch. I saw several of the Airflo Beach lines returned to the fly shop I worked at before opening this place and cracks on other lines from both Rio and Airflo. I'm beginning to think that with all the rod companies making faster rods the torque that gets applied to our lines today can't withstand the strain. Almost all the failures I've seen are in the area right where the head and shooting line join. This is the area that sees most of our efforts applied when we're going for that last false cast. I have several old lines that have stood up for decades and I don't know why. It's not from lack of effort.

I was looking at some lines yesterday, and the Rio Predator has a nearly identical head taper and length to the 40+. No grain weight data available on their site but you'd likely need to up-line one weight to match the 40+. The 5/6 wt is the same 36' length but 7/8/9 drop down to 34'. Still functionally very similar.

Dredging up this old thread to add an opinion/word of caution.

The old 40+ has been my beach line of choice for years, but I damaged my 6wt intermediate. I found their new version online amd purchased this one. Same taper, but apparently new materials.

It still casts great, if you have the entire head out.
However...whatever they made the head out of feels like you're trying to feed sticky rubber through the guides! It does not want to shoot more than a few feet at a time. (Yesterday in the salt, @Nick Clayton confirmed that this was not my imagination!)
Since its normal use is for SRC and coho, I'm almost always stripping right up to the rod tip. Consequently that means I have to work it back out to cast, which is taking a ridiculous 3-5 false casts
Cleaning/conditioning it only helps for the first dozen casts - i.e. temporarily coating what appears to be its natural texture.

Maybe it was just a bad batch? I can't imagine that "sticks in the guides" is a design feature

Most definitely not her imagination!

I made a couple casts with this line yesterday and it was the weirdest thing ever. Literally feels like the coating of the line is sticking to the guides. The head just doesn't want to slide through. I can't imagine someone at Airflo testing that line out and being ok with it. Maybe it was just a strange one off defect or something, I dunno. But it was the strangest feeling line I think I've ever thrown. Would be SUPER frustrating to spend an entire day fishing that line as is.

Thank you for the review. I’ve been wondering about that one but hadn’t pulled the trigger on it.

FYI, sierra has a bunch of sniper and coastal quickshooter lines on clearance now

The Sniper is a really, really awesome line.

That said, I can't believe they'd just up and discontinue the 40+. That's such a steadfast staple line, and has been for years.

Airflo has made a lot of really questionable moves since being bought by Mayfly. Previously being on the "inside" on this topic, I saw a lot of very strange decisions on their side during the transition. They certainly cleaned up their marketing and overall look... but that's about where I stop with my praises on where they eventually went.
