Both the US and Canada are good countries.I’m surprised to hear that you had such a negative experience in my country back in the 70s. That was a pretty laid back era. Give us another try sometime. But be prepared; we might be worse now!
Both Americans and Canadians are good people in almost ALL cases.
My issue was that I was 22 and just graduated from UC Berkeley and moved to graduate school at UBC.
Canada is socially a very conservative country. It was even more so, in 1973. Being from Berkeley didn't help my perceptions.
I remember the Dean of the UBC forestry school saying "Sometimes I just wish the foreign students would just leave (he meant the Americans). Why don't they just keep their mouths shut, get the degree, and go off with good jobs??" At 22 getting a good job was the least of my concerns in graduate school.
I really had a problem with the Queen. In 1973, she was everywhere. On the money, at the post office.....EVERYWHERE. I know it sounds silly now but it reminded me of a gentle 1984!! Everywhere I turned there she WAS!!
The most serious issue was Canada's environmental record. It was awful. I could not see practicing forestry in Canada with my land ethic.
I do owe a debt of gratitude to Canada. I was born in Venezuela, raised by Ukrainian-White Russian parents, and educated in the US. I wasn't sure I was an American until I lived in Canada.
I pretty much lived with a 150 miles or less from the border after I left Canada. So I have spent lots of time up there. Now at 75, I do appreciate Canada much more than I did at 22.
I always liked the expression "children of a common mother", even though I myself was adopted.
