In my experience you're gonna really need to be into gardening and be willing to spend some time. There is a learning curve. I ran a big tray system under lights. You might save water but equipment setup (Trays, baskets, bubblers and sprayers, timers, ect.), chemical supplies, and electricity add up. Test and adjust solution regularly. You'll need to break it down and clean it occasionally.
I had a nice setup of vines and bamboo on the aquarium once but it got to the point maintenance was a bitch.
