I woke up early this morning for some odd reason and while I was having my tea and trying to figure out what I should do with my extra time, that all familiar voice spoke to me again. So, I tossed the Cruzer and a 5wt in the truck and headed up the hill. One of the advantages of living in Cody is that a day trip to Yellowstone is very doable. On my way up I decided to hit Lewis Lake, a place I haven’t fished in a couple years but have caught some decent fish there. It’s rumored that it’s named after our very own Rick Lewis, the lake fishing legend also affectionately known as Roper. Or, maybe it was a distant relative of his, my memory isn’t what it used to be, but I digress.
Lewis Lake is one of the the Park’s larger lakes and sometimes wind can be a factor, but today was blue sky with white puffy clouds and a slight breeze that broke up the glassy surface. Perfect for fishing! Just off the launch area I was catching lots of smaller Yellowstone cutties in about 7-10 ft of water that were going crazy on just about anything put in front of them, but I didn’t bring a 3wt and I was here for bigger fish. So I put on the full sink line and headed for deeper waters. Finally figured out a depth range that was holding some really nice browns and ended up catching six quality fish with a couple other smaller ones. Yellowstone near disappoints, whether with fish or just the scenery, today I got to experience both.
My view for much of the day.

A few of the nicer browns.

Even in some of the more barren areas around the lake the wild flowers were blooming.

Stopped at Sylvan Lake to sit and have something to eat before leaving the Park. One of my favorite little lakes.

Drove past an area that had burned a couple years before we moved to Cody. It’s good to see Mother Nature coming back with a new soon to be forest area.
